Cyrus Blake Scores First Career Goal for Huskies

GORHAM, Maine  – Four different players scored as the Bowdoin College Polar Bears defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 5-1 in a non-conference men's soccer game Wednesday night at Hannaford Field. Bowdoin scored a pair of goals in the opening half and then outscored the Huskies 3-0 in the second half to remain undefeated (4-0-1) in 2023.
 
The Polar Bears are in the Also Receiving Votes category of the most recent United States Soccer Coaches Association Poll.  Bowdoin has outscored its opponents 17-2 so far this season.

Today's game marked the 42nd meeting between the University of Southern Maine and Bowdoin Cotllege. Bowdoin leads the overall series 35-4-3.  The Huskies last defeated the Polar Bears on September 17, 2008 3-1 at home. 
 
How It Happened:
  • Julian Juantorena and Tyler Huck scored within minutes of each other early in the first half to stake Bowdoin to a 2-0 lead. Juantorena laced in his first goal of the season in the 13th minute, while Huck scored his third goal of 2023 in the 17th.
  • Southern Maine freshman Cyrus Blake (Blue Hill, Maine/George Stevens) scored the first goal of his intercollegiate career in the 31st to pull the Huskies to within one of the Polar Bears.  Blake pounced on top of a loose ball in the 18 to score his third point of the season.
  • Ronaldo Cabral gave Bowdoin a 3-1 lead in the 60th minute with an outstanding set-piece goal, whipping the ball around the Huskies' wall and into the top right corner. 
  • Bowdoin led 4-1 in the 78th on a goal from Alden Mehta, before an own goal by the Huskies made it 5-1 in the 85th for the final.

Inside The Stats:
  • Blake's goal against Bowdoin is just the second goal the Polar Bears have allowed this season.
  • Bowdoin held a 20-4 advantage in shot (7-4 on frame).  The Polar Bears also had nine corner kicks to the Huskies one.
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine hosts UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 pm) in a Little East Conference game. The Huskies are on the road for its next to contests after Saturday, traveling to Plymouth State on Wednesday (3:00 pm) for an LEC matchup, and then to UMaine Farmington on Sunday (1:00 pm) for a non-conference game.
