Southern Maine Routs UMaine Farmington 9-0

GORHAM, Maine  –  Junior Abigail Chartier (Lewiston, Maine) scored the first two goals of the game to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 9-0 victory over the UMaine Farmington Beavers in a non-conference field hockey game Wednesday evening at Hannaford Field.
 
The Huskies' nine goals are a season-high.  The Southern Maine single game record for goals in a game is 11 set in an 11-0 win over New England College on September 16, 2014.

Tonight's game marked the 63rd meeting between the University of Southern Maine and the UMaine Farmington Beavers.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 39-16-8. The Huskies have won the last four games, including a 7-0 win at UMaine Farmington on October 13, 2022.
 
How It Happened:
  • Chartier scored early twice for the Huskies, putting USM up 1-0 in the second minute off of a feed from senior Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine/Oxford Hills) and then doubling the advantage in the third minute on an unassisted goal.
  • USM led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter as freshman Dylan Barr (Phippsburg, Maine/Morse) competed the assist from senior Hannah Banks (Belfast, Maine). 
  • The Huskies added two more goals in the second quarter to take a commanding 5-0 lead at the half. Carson scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 19th minute, redirecting a pass in from junior Hanni Johnson (Livermore, Maine/Spruce Mountain), before Banks knocked in an unassisted goal in the 22nd.
  • Senior Jordan Cummings (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) made it 6-0 early in the third quarter converting a penalty stroke in the 32nd minute.
  • Barr, senior Emma Samson (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) and freshman Norie Tibbets (Skowhegan, Maine) each scored in the fourth for the 9-0 final.

Inside The Statistics:
  • The Huskies are 3-0 at home this season and have outscored their opponents 14-1 at Hannaford Field.  The Huskies have held their opponents scoreless for 179 minutes consecutively while playing at Hannaford. 
  • Carson's goal gives her a team-leading five this season.  Carson has 30 goals in her career and is now tied for ninth in career goals.
  • Barr's goals are the first and second of her intercollegiate career. Seniors Hannah Banks (Belfast, Maine), and Jordan Cummings (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little), and junior Emma Samson (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) each scored their first goal of 2023.

The Huskies are off this Saturday, and return to action on Tuesday (7:00 pm) against Salem State. Southern Maine then hosts Husson University on Thursday (7:00 pm) before traveling to Western New England on Saturday (1:00 pm) and Johnson & Wales on Sunday (2:00 pm).
