Huskies Remain Undefeated at Home, Down Salem State 3-1

GORHAM, Maine  –  Three different players scored as the University of Southern Maine Huskies earned a 3-1 win over the Salem State University Vikings in a non-conference field hockey game Tuesday night at Hannaford Field.
 
Freshman Dylan Barr (Phippsburg, Maine/Morse), junior Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) and junior Abigail Chartier (Lewiston, Maine) each scored as the Huskies remain undefeated at home this season in four games at Hannaford Field.

Tonight's game marked the 45th meeting between the University of Southern Maine and Salem State University.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 29-14-2, and has won the last eight games consecutively. The Huskies defeated the Vikings 7-0 on the road in 2022.  Sage Drinkwater had a hat trick in the game.
 
How It Happened:
  • Barr started the Huskies scoring putting USM up 1-0 in the 12th minute, knocking in a loose ball in front of the cage for her third goal of the season.
  • After a scoreless second quarter, Drinkwater put USM up 2-0 early in the third quarter for her second goal of the season. Drinkwater completed the assist from senior Mary Keef (Westbrook, Maine). 
  • The Huskies went up 3-0 in the 48th as Chartier flipped in a back-handed shot for her fourth goal of the season.
  • Salem State broke up the shutout in the 53rd minute as Kayla Mason raced onto a ball and beat the lone defender before besting the Huskies' Eleanor Folsom one-on-one with a breakaway goal.  However, Salem State was unable to get any closer for the final.

  • The Huskies are 4-0 at home this season and have outscored their opponents 17-2 at Hannaford Field. 
  • Barr has three goals in the Huskies' last two games. She is one of six players with at least two goals this season, and one of 10 different goal scorers for Southern Maine.
  • Drinkwater now has 28 goals, 12 assists and 68 points in her career. She is tied for 12th all-time in goals, tied for 14th in assists, and tied for 10th in points.
 
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine hosts Husson University on Thursday (7:00 pm) before traveling to Western New England on Saturday (1:00 pm) and Johnson & Wales on Sunday (2:00 pm) for a trio of non-conference games.  The Huskies are back at home on Tuesday, September 26 (7:00 pm) against Endicott College before opening their Little East Conference schedule at home against Keene State (3:00 pm).  The Huskies will be honoring the 20th anniversary of their 2003 Little East Conference Championship team during the game.
