Simon Gabaree (Windham, Maine) made nine saves in goal as the University of Southern Maine Huskies earned a 3-2 win over the Nichols College Bison in the 2023 season-opener at Hannaford Field. The win is the first in the career for head coach

Today's contest was the first meeting between the Huskies and the Bison. Both teams are playing in their 2023 season opener. USM is 1-0 and Nichols in 0-1.

How It Happened:
- Johnson gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead converting a penalty kick in the 11th minute.
- Nichols outshot the Huskies 5-2 in the first half, but Gabaree was up to the task to send Southern Maine up 1-0 at the halftime break. Gabree made four first half saves.
- Perry doubled the Huskies lead in the 59th minute finishing an assist from freshman Jack Brady (Jensen Beach, Fla.) Brady played the ball out right to Perry who finished to the far post.
- USM led 3-0 in the 69th minute as Altaie laced a rocket of a shot from distance off of Brady's second assist of the game.
- Nichols broke up the shutout in the 76th minute as Ethan Knowles put the Bison on the board. The Bison continued its late scoring surge making it a 3-2 game in the 89th minute on a looping far-post goal from Ethan Gosper. The Huskies were able to hold for the 3-2 win.

- The Huskies three goals are the most scored by the team since a 4-0 win over UMaine Presque Isle in 2021.
- Gabaree earned the win in his first collegiate start and first collegiate appearance.
