GORHAM, Maine – Junior
Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) had a goal and an assist as the University of Southern Maine Huskies overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat the Thomas College Terriers 3-1 in their 2023 season-opening game at Hannaford Field.
Both teams were playing in their season-opener. Meeting for the eighth time, Thomas leads the series 5-3. Southern Maine defeated the Terriers 6-5 in 2021, and Thomas was a 1-0 victor in the 2019 meeting, and a 5-0 winner against USM in 2022.

How It Happened:
- Kayci Faulkingham had the Terriers up 1-0 just 58 seconds into the contest following the first of five first-period penalty corners for Thomas. After receiving the ball from inserter Samantha Thebarge, Faulkingham hit a low driven shot to the far post.
- Thomas maintained its one-goal lead through the first period and nearly until halftime. However, Husky junior Abigail Chartier (Lewiston, Maine) knocked in a goal with six seconds remaining before the halftime buzzer, completing an assist from Drinkwater.
- With the score remaining tied at 1-1 through the third period, Southern Maine scored twice in the fourth to complete the comeback. Drinkwater scored in the 47th minute for the game-winner, before senior Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine/Oxford Hills) added an insurance goal in the 57th for the 3-1 final. Chartier sent in the centering pass to Carson for the assist.

- Drinkwater now has 27 goals and 11 assists in her career for 65 points. She is tied for 14th in program history for goals, 17th in assists and is 13th in points. The goal was also Drinkwater's eighth game-winning goal of her career.
- Carson's goal is the 26th of her career, and ranks her 15th.
