Southern Maine Sweeps Western Connecticut 14-0 (7 inn), 8-4; Huskies Have Won Six Straight

GORHAM, Maine  – Freshman Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony ) was 5-for-10 at the plate with four runs scored and five RBI to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a Little East Conference doubleheader sweep of the Western Connecticut State University Wolves Saturday afternoon at Ed Flaherty Field.
 
The Huskies defeated WestConn 14-0 (7 innings) in game one and then took an 8-4 win in game two.  The Huskies pounded out 27 hits over two games, including a season-high 18 hits in game one. 
 
THE SERIES:
Today's games marked the 68th and 69th meeting between Southern Maine and Western Connecticut State.  The Huskies lead the overall series 54-15 and have won the last five consecutively against the Wolves. USM is 13-2 against WestConn in their last 15 meetings. The Huskies defeated the Wolves 15-0 (7 inn) and 10-5 in 2022.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. WestConn Game 1:
  • Up 1-0 after two and a half innings, Southern Maine exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the third and went on two win 14-0 in a seven-inning game. Douin was 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI, including a three-run triple in the third and a two-run home run over the 406 mark in right field in a four-run fifth inning.
  • Led by Douin, Southern Maine had four players with at least two hits.  Senior Arlo Pike (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while senior Jason Komulainen (Gorham, Maine) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Senior Tom Vesosky (Colchester, Vermont) was 2-for-3 with a runs scored and two RBI from the lead off position.
  • Collecting a season-high 18 hits, nine of the Huskies' hits were for extra bases, including five doubles from Komulainen (2), Pike, junior Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and senior Jonathan Wilson (Granby, Conn.). Vesosky, Douin and senior Brogan Searle-Belanger (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) each had a triple, while Douin accounted for the home run. 
  • Sophomore Clay Robbins (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) picked up his third win of the season, holding WestConn to three hits and a walk in six innings. He struck out three.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. WestConn - Game 2:
  • Ahead 3-2 after the top of the fifth, Southern Maine scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take control of the game. The Huskies scored their four runs on four hits and a walk while taking advantage of a WestConn fielding error.
  • Douin and Wilson led off the inning with back-to-back singles.  Douin scored on a flubbed throw to keep the Huskies with runners on first and third and one out.  USM loaded the bases with a walk to Pike setting up Komulainen, who hit a hard shot to shortstop that took a tough bounce on the fielder for a two-run single and a 6-2 Husky lead. Searle-Belanger followed with an RBI single through the left side to score Pike and give USM a 7-2 lead.
  • After a scoreless sixth, USM added one more run in the seventh when sophomore Anthony Poole (South Portland, Maine) scored on a wild pitch.  Poole reached with a lead off single to center, and moved into scoring position on a ground out and a wild pitch.
  • WestConn scored a pair of runs in its final at bat as sophomore Nicholas Moeller connected on a two-run single up the middle. 
  • Barnett pitched well for USM in his start to earn his first win of 2023.  He went five innings allowing two runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out four.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Southern Maine has won six consecutively and are 5-0 at Ed Flaherty Field this season. 
  • In its last four games, the Huskies have had 58 hits. They have 179 for the season.
 
UP NEXT:
Southern Maine hosts Colby College on Wednesday (3:30 pm) in a non-conference game.  The Huskies then head to Babson College on Thursday (3:30 pm) for another non-conference match-up. USM returns to action in the LEC on Saturday (12:00 pm) against No. 5 Eastern Connecticut State.
