Seven In A Row: Huskies Defeat Colby 6-3

GORHAM, Maine –  Freshman Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) drove in two runs, and senior Jason Komulainen (Gorham, Maine) was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeat the Colby College Mules 6-3 Wednesday afternoon at Ed Flaherty Field in a non-conference baseball game.  The win was the seventh consecutive for the Huskies.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The first four Husky batters at the plate reach safely as part of a five-run first inning for the Southern Maine.  Douin had a two-run double to the gap in left to put USM ahead 2-0, and then came around to score on a passed ball for a 3-0 lead.
  • The Huskies were up 4-0 following Komulainen's triple to right.  Komulainen picked up the RBI driving in senior Jonathan Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) who reached safely with a double. Sophomore Anthony Poole (South Portland, Maine) made it 5-0 one batter later with an RBI single to right to bring home Komulainen.
  • Colby responded with a big inning of its own in the top of the second, scoring three runs on three hits. Marcus Forrester had a one-out double to start the rally, and Matthew Panker drew a two-out walk before Charlie Furlong drove them both in with a double to right for a 5-2 deficit.  The Mules' Clint Flippo made it 5-3 with an RBI single to score Furlong, but was caught stealing to end the inning.
  • Scoring took a break until the bottom of the fourth when USM made it 6-3.  Komulainen led off the inning with a bunt single towards third base and advanced to second on a walk from senior Arlo Pike (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle).  After the Huskies' second out, Komulainen was able to score on a throwing error.
  • Miner remained in front and worked his way around a two-out walk in the fifth and faced one batter in the top of the sixth before giving way to junior Lucas Francis (Lisbon, Maine/Lisbon Falls).  With a runner on, Francis forced three straight outs on a ground out and two fly outs. Francis pitched through the eighth for USM, firing 3.0 innings and allowing just two hits while striking out one.
  • Sophomore Gavin Rawstrom (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill) started the ninth in relief for the Huskies and got the first two outs, including a strikeout, before junior Matt Burnett (Ellsworth, Maine) entered for the final out.  Burnett got the ground out and picked up the save for the 6-3 final.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
  • Half of the Huskies' six hits were for extra bases. Douin and Wilson each had a double, while Komulainen had a triple.
  • USM is 6-0 at home this season.
  • Douin has hit safely in seven consecutive games.  He is 14-for-32 during that stretch for a .437 batting average with two doubles, two triples, a home run and 14 RBI.
  • USM is hitting .349 as a team in its last seven games. Senior Brogan Searle-Belanger (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and Tom Vesosky (Colchester, Vermont) lead USM hitting .478 over those seven games. Both are 11-for-23 at the plate in those seven games.
