Southern Maine Blanks Rhode Island College 18-0

GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse team recorded the fifth shutout in program history on Wednesday evening with an 18-0 Little East Conference victory over Rhode Island College. Southern Maine goalies Cece Racine (Lewiston, Maine) and Lydia Laslavic (Thomaston, Maine/Oceanside) each made one save in the win. Rachel Shanks (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) scored four goals to lead the Huskies while freshman Maddie Kinney (Topsham, Maine/ Mt. Ararat) and sophomore Anna Byers (Milford, Ct./ Joseph A. Foran) each scored three. The Huskies are now 5-1 in conference play and have clinched a top-three seed in the upcoming conference tournament. The shutout is the first for Southern Maine since a 19-0 win over UMaine Farmington on March 14, 2019.

USM: Racine: 9-6, one save, zero goals allowed, 1.000 save percentage
USM: Laslavic: one save, zero goals allowed, 1.000 save percentage
RIC: Meghan Quinn: 0-1, two saves, 10 goals allowed, .167 save percentage
RIC: Shannon O'Connell, five saves, eight goals allowed, .385 save percentage
 
 
How It Happened:
  • The Huskies scored 10 goals in the first quarter led by four from Shanks and two apiece from Kinney and Byers.
  • Freshmen Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) and Raegan Bechard (Augusta, Maine/Cony) also scored goals in the quarter.
  • Junior Kiaya Gatchell (Portland, Maine/Deering) assisted on two goals in the quarter and Kinney and Hill logged assists as well.
  • The Huskies scored three more times in the second with sophomore Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine), junior Jillian Nichols (Gorham, Maine) and Kinney all putting the ball in the net. McKenna assisted on Kinney's goal and freshman Molly Black (Windham, Maine) had an assist on the goal by Nichols.
  • Black scored the lone goal of the third quarter with McKenna providing the assist.
  • Sophomore Emily Cloutier (Brunswick, Maine) scored twice in the fourth. Ella Nason (Wells, Maine/Noble) and Byers also had goals in the final frame with Cloutier assisting on Nason's goal.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Racine and Laslavic both stopped the only shot on goal they faced with both shots coming from RIC's Emily Marino.
  • In total 11 different Huskies logged points and 10 different players scored goals.
  • Byers won eight draw controls and the Huskies dominated the statistic at a 16-5 margin.
  • The Huskies played strong defensively with freshman Britney Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy), graduate student Payton Winslow (Auburn, Maine/St. Anthony's), senior Maeve McGarrity (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) and McKenna among the leaders defensively.
  • The Huskies limited the Anchorwomen to just five shots in the contest.
 
Up Next: The Huskies will battle LEC-leading Western Connecticut State on Saturday at noon at Hannaford Field. Before the game the Huskies will be holding Senior Day and celebrating McGarrity.
