GORHAM, Maine – Vicky Gracy and Colleen Crotty each recorded three goals and an assist to help lead the Western Connecticut State Wolves to an 11-8 win over the University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon. With the victory the Wolves secured the top seed in the 2023 Little East Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament and finish the regular season undefeated in conference play at 7-0. WCSU: Anna Schipf: 12-2, seven saves, six goals allowed, .538 save percentage
WCSU: Molly Bresnahan: two saves, two goals allowed, .500 save percentage
USM: Cece Racine (Lewiston, Maine): 9-7, 13 save, 11 goals allowed, .542 save percentage
How It Happened:
- The two teams were evenly matched in the first quarter with each side scoring three times.
- The Huskies took their first lead of the game early in the second quarter off a Maddie Kinney (Topsham, Maine/ Mt. Ararat) goal before the Wolves tied the game with a goal from Crotty and retook the lead when Dominique DeMarsico found the back of the net with 2:18 left in the half.
- With just seven seconds left in the half sophomore Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine) scored on a free-position shot to tie the game once again.
- WestConn's Alexa Riggio scored the only goal of the third quarter to give the Wolves a 6-5 lead heading to the final frame. Racine made three saves in the quarter for Southern Maine.
- Gracy and Colleen Crotty each scored twice in the fourth to help the Wolves pull away from the Huskies.
- Southern Maine threatened late in the fourth when Schipf was forced to sit out due to a penalty and Bresnahan replaced her in goal. The Huskies scored a pair of free-position goals during the penalty but Bresnahan denied Kinney twice in the final 90 seconds to put an end to the threat.
Inside The Stats:
- Kinney, McKenna, Rachel Shanks (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) and freshman Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) scored two goals apiece. Each player scored at least one free-position goal with McKenna netting two.
- DeMarsico and Faye Junge each had three points for the Wolves.
- The draw controls proved to be a difference maker as the Wolves won the battle 14-8.
- The Huskies went 5-of-7 on free-position shots.
Up Next: The number three seed Huskies will host six seed UMass Dartmouth in the first round of the LEC Championship Tournament on Tuesday evening at 5PM at Hannaford Field. The two teams last met on April 14 at UMass Dartmouth with the Huskies coming away with a 20-12 win.
