Snyder Fires No-Hitter, Huskies Split with UMass Dartmouth 5-6, 4-0

GORHAM, Maine - Junior Belle Snyder (Epping, N.H.) fired the first seven-inning no-hitter since the 2019 season to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 4-0 shutout win over the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs in the second game of a Little East Conference softball doubleheader.  With the win in game two, Southern Maine salvaged the split against UMD, dropping game one 6-5.

Snyder's no-hitter is the second of her career. She earned a five-inning no-hitter against Rhode Island College on Aprii 5, 2022. Today's seven-inning effort is the first since former Husky standout Alexis Brown '21 fired a no-hitter against UMass Dartmouth on May 3, 2019.

THE SERIES:
Today's doubleheader marked the 76th and 77th meeting between the University of Southern Maine and UMass Dartmouth Corsairs in series history. The Huskies lead the overall series 47-29-1, and 6-3-1 in the last 10 games. HOW IT HAPPENED vs. UMD Game 1:
  • Southern Maine led early, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning.  Senior Rona Scott (Beverly, Mass.) led the Huskies with a two-run RBI single up the middle.  Scott drove in senior Lauren Miller (St. George, Maine/Camden Hills) and Snyder who reached on a walk and an error, respectively.  Junior Lauren Merill (Bethel, Maine/Oxford Hills) singled in her at bat, but Miller was thrown out at home to keep it runner at second and third for Scott. Scott's two RBI gives her 13 for the season.
  • USM stayed in front until the top of the fourth when the Corsairs scored five runs on five hits. Hailey Lyons drove in the first run for UMD with a single, before Lindsay Chubbuck put the Corsairs up 3-2 with a two-run double to the wall in center field.  Leah Major made it 5-2 for the Corsairs with a two-run double of her own before the Huskies got out of the inning.
  • USM threatened in the fifth as freshman Olviia Levasseur (Amesbury, Mass.) led off with a double to left, and the Huskies loaded the bases with two outs on back-to-back walks from Snyder and Merrill, but Richards was able to get a fly out to center to end the threat.
  • The Corsairs tacked on one more run in the top of the sixth on an RBI double from Chubbuck, before the Huskies rallied to bring themselves back into the game with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Junior Dory Kulis (Georgetown, Maine/Morse) had an RBI single to left to start the rally. Snyder singled in a run with an infield single to short, while Merrill walked in a run for the 6-5 score. With the bases loaded and two outs, Kaitlyn Shirshac entered the game and got the final out for the Corsairs.
  • The score remained 6-5 after the top of the seventh, and USM was unable to put across another run for the final.

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. UMD Game 2:
  • With Snyder silencing the Corsair bats, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.  Scott led off the inning with a double down the left field line, and two outs later, senior Hannah Shields (Buckfield, Maine) came through with an RBI single.
  • USM made it 3-0 in the third.  Levasseur singled to left to start the inning, and Merrill had a two-run single to left to highlight a three-hit inning for the Huskies.
  • Shields put the game out of reach in the sixth with an RBI double to the gap in right, and Snyder closed out the game with three straight outs in the seventh for the win.  Firing the no-hit, shut out, Snyder did not allow a runner past first base until the fifth inning.  UMD's Lyons drew one of three walks against Snyder and beat out a tag to get to second.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • With a single in game one of the doubleheader, Day has 99 career hits.
  • Shields finished the doubleheader going 4-for-7 at the plate with a double and two RBI. Merrill was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two walks.
