Southern Maine Overpowers Wellesley for Third Straight Win

GORHAM, Maine – Graduate student Rachel Shanks (Naples, Maine/Lake Region) scored six goals for the third consecutive game and also recorded two assists in a 17-4 win for the University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse team over Wellesley College on Wednesday afternoon. Junior Kiaya Gatchell (Portland, Maine/Deering) and freshman Maddie Kinney (Topsham, Maine/ Mt. Ararat) also had significant contributions for Southern Maine with Gatchell recording five assists and two goals and Kinney scoring five times and assisting on a goal.

The Records: Southern Maine: 4-5, Wellesley: 2-6
 
The Goalies: 
USM: Cece Racine (Lewiston, Maine): 4-4, two saves, two goals allowed, .500 save percentage.
USM: Lydia Laslavic (Thomaston, Maine/Oceanside): four saves, two goals allowed, .667 save percentage.
Wellesley: Anna Blake Patrick: 1-3, six saves, 12 goals allowed, .333 save percentage
Wellesley: Hannah Pangborn: five goals allowed, .000 save percentage.
 
How It Happened:
  • Gatchell recorded four points in the first quarter off of two goals and two assists as the Huskies outscored the Blue 5-1 in the first 15 minutes. Shanks also scored two goals and Kinney scored a goal as well. Junior Jillian Nichols (Gorham, Maine) and sophomore Anna Byers (Milford, Ct./ Joseph A. Foran) also recorded assists in the quarter.
  • The Huskies scored five more times in the second quarter with Kinney scoring three times and Shanks and sophomore Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine) each scoring a woman up goal. McKenna's goal came on a free position shot.
  • Gabrielle Shell scored both Wellesley goals in the first half.
  • Southern Maine scored another five goals in the third while Wellesley scored once in the quarter. Shanks netted three goals and assisted on a goal by Byers. Kinney scored her fifth goal of the game during the quarter as well.
  • Shell scored her third goal of the game in the fourth quarter and sophomore Emily Cloutier (Brunswick, Maine) scored the final two goals of the game to make the final score 17-4.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Shanks has scored six goals in each of the past three games and her two assists in today's game doubles her season total.
  • Gatchell's five assists are tied for the third-most in a game in program history.
  • Shell scored three of Wellesley's four goals with the other coming from Ryan Boone.
  • Liz Sugg and Mattie Knowles recorded assists for Wellesley.
  • The Huskies grabbed 26 ground balls led by seven from freshman Cierra Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) and four apiece from Gatchell and junior Paige Rinaldi (Freeport, Maine).
  • The Huskies forced 27 turnovers with Hill, Rinaldi, Gatchell, and McKenna leading the way.
  • Junior Zowie Cheetham-Wilmot (Biddeford, Maine), senior Maeve McGarrity (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) and graduate student Payton Winslow (Auburn, Maine/St. Anthony's) also played well defensively and caused multiple turnovers.
  • McKenna won seven draw controls for the Huskies.
