CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Graham Cartwright was 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored to lead the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers over the University of Southern Maine Huskies 8-4 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Fran O'Brien Field.
MIT connected on 14 hits, including six for extra bases. Cartwright had two home runs in the game.

Today's game marked the 13
th meeting between the Huskies and the Engineers. Southern Maine leads the overall series 9-4. USM and MIT met three times in 2022, with the Huskies winning two of three. Southern Maine swept a doubleheader 10-3 and 10-4 in a pair of 7-inning contests at Gorham. MIT took its home game in 11 innings 9-8.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- MIT starter Karl Meyer went 5.1 innings allowing four hits and struck out seven, while reliever Matthew Spenner picked up the save with 3.2 innings pitched. Spenner allowed just one hit over the final 3.1 innings, and struck out five. Meyer and Spenner combined for 12 strikeouts in the game.
- The Huskies led early taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Freshman Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) laced an RBI triple down the right field line for a two-out RBI. Douin's second triple of the season and sixth RBI scored sophomore Anthony Poole (South Portland, Maine). Poole reached safely drawing a two-out walk.
- MIT took the lead in the bottom of the second scoring two runs off of an RBI double from Eitan Moore and an RBI triple from Kennan Gumbs. The Engineers made it 4-1 in the bottom of the third when Cartwright hit the first of his two home runs of the game. Kyle Sonandres led off the inning with a double to right before Cartwright connected on a home run to left.
- After a scoreless fourth, MIT increased its run total to five as Cartwright struck again, this time for a solo shot to center and a 5-1 Engineer advantage.
- The Huskies roared back in the top of the sixth. Douin hit his first intercollegiate home run to lead off the inning making it 5-2. One out and a walk to senior Arlo Pike (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) later, Southern Maine's Jonathan Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) made it a one-run game, 5-4, with a two-run home run to left field.
- MIT answered back in the bottom of the sixth, however, with a pair of RBI singles, and Meyer kept the Huskies hitless over the seventh, eighth and ninth inning for the 8-4 final.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Wilson finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate for Southern Maine with one run scored and two RBI. It was Wilson's first multiple-hit game of 2023.
- Finishing the game 2-for-4 at the plate, Douin is hitting .359 early in his Southern Maine career. He has 14 hits, including five for extra bases, and has picked up six RBI.
