UT Dallas Defeats Southern Maine 11-1

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – University of Texas-Dallas Comets' pitchers combined to hold the University of Southern Maine Huskies to four hits, all singles, and scored 11 runs off of 10 hits to earn an 11-1 win at the RussMatt Invitational.
 
Apollo Cassimatis pitched five innings of scoreless ball in the start for the Comets, while Ben Soule and Ben Price combined to hold USM to just one hit in the final three innings for the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Comets scored at least one run in each inning with the exception of the fourth inning.  UT Dallas led 3-0 after the first three innings were played and led 4-0 after the top of the fifth.
  • Southern Maine scored its first run of the game in the home half of the fifth inning.  Senior Brogan Searle-Belanger (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a hit batter and a fielder's choice before scoring on an errant throw by the Comets.
  • UT Dallas added two more runs in the top of the sixth making it a 6-1 lead over Southern Maine before blowing the game open with four runs in the top of the seventh. Andrew Skivington, Jaeger Self and Colin Ethridge each had an RBI for the Comets in the inning.
  • Nico Fernandez made it 11-1 in the top of the eighth with an RBI double to left for UT Dallas, and the Huskies were unable to respond for the 11-1 (8 inning) final.
  • UT Dallas pitchers combined to hold Southern Maine to just four hits in the game, and struck out eight batters.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman Chris Quigley (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) had two of the Huskies four hits. Quiqley was 2-for-3.  Quigley is hitting .333 (5-for-15) in his first four intercollegiate games.

Southern Maine returns to action on Tuesday (4:30 pm) against University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
