The College of New Jersey Downs Southern Maine 8-2

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Ben Amon picked up the win pitching six strong innings, striking out eight, and Chris Reeder and Justin Marcario each drove in two runs to lead The College of New Jersey Lions to an 8-2 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies at the RussMatt Invitational.
 
Southern Maine's freshmen Chris Quigley (Halifax, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) and Kyle Douin (Augusta, Maine/Cony) and junior Janek Lukzsa (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) each had two hits to lead the Huskies.  Junior Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/thornton Academy) and senior Jason Komulainen (Gorham, Maine) each had an RBI.

In 2022, Southern Maine earned an 8-7 win over TCNJ in 12 innings in Winter Haven, Fla.  The two schools have faced each other six times. With today's result, TCNJ evened the series at 3-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The College of New Jersey scored five runs over the first two innings, and Lions' pitcher Amon picked up three of his eight strikeouts in the bottom of first to jump ahead early.  Andrew Fernandez drove in the first run of the game with a single down the left field line, and Justin Marcario made it 2-0 in the first with an RBI single to right
  • In the second, the Lions posted three runs highlighted by a two-run single from Chris Reeder.
  • TCNJ increased its lead to 7-0 in the top of the fourth as the Lions scored their seventh unanswered run on an RBI sacrifice fly from Reeder.
  • Husky junior Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) broke up the shutout driving in Southern Maine's first run of the game with an RBI single to left in the fifth.  Seymour drove in junior Janek Lukzsa (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) who led off the inning with a single.
  • Senior Jason Komulainen (Gorham, Maine) made it 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field, but the Lions scored the final run of the game in the top of the eighth for the 8-2 final.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Southern Maine's Quigley picked up the first two hits of his career going 2-for-3
  • Komulainen picked up his 29th double of his career and his 122nd hit of his career.
