GORHAM, Maine – A goal in the final minute of overtime gave the Salem State University Vikings a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in women's New England Hockey Conference action. Prior to the game the Huskies honored their four senior captains Amanda Crowley (South Yarmouth, Mass./Tilton School), Peyton Dukas (Fairfield, Vt.), Jordan Colbert (Manomet, Mass./Plymouth) and Maddy Young (Westford, Vt.).

Score: Vikings 2, Huskies 1

The Records: SSU: 6-15-2, 3-13-2 NEHC, Southern Maine: 13-11-1, 11-6-1 NEHC

The Goaltenders: Hannah Aveni: 3-6-1, 25 saves, one goal allowed; Sophomore Ellie Fredenburg (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge and Latin): 1-2-0, 30 saves, two goals allowed

How It Happened/Inside the Boxscore:
  • Just like the night before neither team scored in the first period thanks to strong goalie play. Fredenburg made 10 saves while Aveni stopped seven shots.
  • The game remained scoreless until sophomore Madison Chagnon (St. Albans, Vt./Rice Memorial) intercepted a Viking pass in the offensive zone and flipped the puck out to Young. Young sent a quick pass to freshman Saige MacLeod (Dryden, ON, Canada) with empty ice in front of her. MacLeod crashed the net and made a move to beat Aveni for her sixth goal of the year.
  • Abby Stafford tied the game for the Vikings with a goal 4:19 into the third but neither team could pull ahead in regulation forcing an overtime period.
  • Fredenburg made four saves during overtime but a Viking shot finally snuck through with 28 seconds left on the clock to give Salem State the win. At the time the Vikings had a four-on-three advantage with an extra skater due to a delay penalty call.
  • The two teams combined for nine penalties but neither team could convert their power play opportunities.
  • Chagnon finishes the NEHC regular season tied for most goals in the league with 22. She also finishes the regular season third in points with 31.

Up Next: The Huskies are heading to the NEHC playoffs as the #3 seed and will face #6 seed UMass Boston on Saturday, February 18 at 4PM.
