MIT Shoots Past Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine  –   Kamsi Nwogu had 14 points and seven rebounds to lead the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Engineers to a 67-43 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in  a non-conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Hill Gymnasium.
 
Nwogu was 6-for-7 from the field to lead MIT.  Sarah Berman added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Alice Hall and Grace Harrington each had eight points.  Paula Pieper had four points, four rebounds, four steals and a game-high eight assists.
 
Southern Maine junior Tamrah Gould (Manchester, N.H.) led the Huskies with 11 points making 3-of-4 from three-point range.  Junior Amy Fleming (Berwick, Maine/Noble) added 10 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Freshman Emma Haskell (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) had six points, seven rebounds, and four steals off of the bench.

Series History:
Meeting for just the second time in series history, MIT earned a 85-42 win over the Huskies in their first meeting on February 2, 2022. .
 
How It Happened:
  • Fleming scored the first basket of the game for the Huskies to give USM a 2-0 lead but MIT responded with a 17-0 run over the next four minutes to take a commanding 17-2 lead. USM sophomore Maria Degifico (South Portland, Maine) canned a three at the 3:25 mark to make it 17-5, but MIT took a 20-5 lead to end the first.
  • The Huskies scored the first four points of the second quarter on a jumper from Haskell and a layup from sophomore Gabby Green (Manchester, Maine/Maranacook).  The Huskies trailed 26-12 at the 5:05 mark following a jumper from freshman Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia) before MIT closed out the half on a 6-3 run to lead 32-15 at the half. 
  • MIT started hot in the third ballooning its lead to 48-16 with a 16-1 run in the first five minutes of the quarter. Berman hit two threes for the Engineers in the run. USM strung together a 6-0 run on a three from Fleming, a layup from Haskell and one of two free throws from Roderick to trail 48-22, but MIT closed the quarter on a 6-2 run to lead 54-24 headed into the half.
  • Southern Maine outscored MIT 19-13 in the fourth. Down 59-26 after two free throws from Nwogu at the 8:07 mark, USM scored seven unanswered on a three from Fleming, two free throws from junior Franny Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) and a jumper from Degifico to trail 59-33 with 6:24 to play. Nwogu ended the run for MIT with a layup before USM outscored the Engineers 10-6 to close the game for the 67-43 final.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • MIT had a decisive advantage in rebounding, leading the Huskies 52-29. MIT had 14 offensive rebounds to seven for the Huskies, and scored eight points off of second-chance shots.
  •  Berman, Nwogu and Hall each had seven rebounds for the Engineers.
  • Haskell's seven rebounds are a career-high. 
 
Up Next:
The Huskies return to Little East Conference action on Saturday (1:00 pm) and host UMass Dartmouth.
