UMass Dartmouth Fights Off Huskies 77-71

GORHAM, Maine  – Jordan Moretti and Jessica Carroll each scored 16 points to lead the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs to a 77-71 win over the University of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.
 
Moretti finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals, while Carroll had 16 points, five rebounds and three steals.  Teja Andrews rounded out the double-figures scoring for UMD with 14 points and eight rebounds.
 
Four Huskies scored in double-figures led by a game-high 20 points from junior Amy Fleming (Berwick, Maine).  Fleming was 7-for-12 from the field, adding three rebounds, three assists.  Junior Franny Ramsdell (Wells, Maine) scored 15 points going 8-for-8 from the free throw line while shooting 3-for-8 from the floor. Freshman Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia) came off of the bench for 11 points, five rebounds and two assists, while junior Tamrah Gould (Manchester, N.H.) added 10 points.

Series History:
Meeting for the 83rd time in series history, Southern Maine leads the overall series 66-17.  UMass Dartmouth has won the last 10 games over the Huskies.
 
How It Happened:
  • With the score tied at 5-5 midway through the first quarter, the Corsairs outscored the Huskies 16-6 in the final five minutes to take a 21-11 lead at the end of the first. Moretti scored 10 of the Corsairs' 16 points in the run.
  • UMD scored the first seven points of the second quarter to balloon its lead to 17, 28-11, with 6:37 to play before USM answered with an 8-0 run to trail 28-19 with 4:26 on the clock capped by a three from Fleming.  Both teams exchanged buckets down the stretch, and a layup from freshman Emma Haskell and a jumper from junior Ashlee Aceto (South Portland, Maine) closed the quarter for USM, trailing 36-30 at the half.
  • In the third, UMD scored the first four points of the quarter and held USM off by 8-10 points for most of the frame.  A jumper from Andrews made its 50-40 in favor of the Corsairs with 3:33 to play.  An offensive rebounds and a putback from Vaughan made it 50-42 on the next play, but the Corsairs closed on an 11-5 run for a 61-47 lead headed to the fourth.
  • After a quite first three minutes of the fourth, scoring resumed and the Huskies were able to get within three possessions, 69-58, with 3:14 top play after two free throws from Fleming and a layup from Ramsdell.  The score was 73-64 with 46 seconds to play following another bucket from Fleming, and the Huskies continued to battle trailing by five, 74-69, on a three from Vaughan with 17 seconds left. Carroll made one of two free throws to make it a 75-69 Corsair lead on the next play, before Fleming hit a layup in transition to make it 75-71 with seconds to play.  UMD closed it out on the line for the 77-71 final.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • The Huskies shot 36.8 percent (25-for-68) from the field in the game but were 58.3 percent (7-for-12) in the second quarter.  USM was an outstanding 93.8 percent (15-for-16) from the free throw line.
  • UMass Dartmouth outscored USM 30-20 in the paint, and had 16 points off of USM turnovers. 
 
Up Next:
The Huskies are back in action at home on Monday (6:00 pm) against non-conference opponent Bates College.  Southern Maine is on the road for its next three contests against LEC opponents.
