No. 4 Rhode Island College Defeats Southern Maine 68-27

GORHAM, Maine  – Izabelle Booth scored 14 points to lead three players in double-figures as the No. 4 Rhode Island College Anchormen defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 68-27 in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Hill Gymnasium.
 
Booth was 6-for-11 from the field to lead all scorers.  Sophia Guerrier had 10 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two assists for RIC, scoring her 1000th career point in the process.  Jeniyah Jones added 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Southern Maine was led by six points each from seniors Liz Cote (Conway, N.H./Kennett) and Tara Flanders (Windham, Maine). 
 
Leading wire-to-wire, the win keeps the nationally-ranked Anchormen undefeated at 8-0. The loss snaps a two-game win streak for Southern Maine.

Today's game marked the 93rd meeting between the Rhode Island College Anchormen and the University of Southenrn Maine Huskies.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 69-23; however, Rhode Island College has won the last nine games consecutively dating back to the 2019-2020 season.  RIC is the defending Little East Conference Champions, and advanced to the NCAA Division III Final Four in 2023.
 
 
 
How It Happened:
  • RIC shot 55.6 percent (10-for-18) in the first quarter to jump out to a 20-9 lead.  Jones had six points to pace the Anchormen.  RIC continued to shoot well in the second quarter (8-for-18) and led 41-14 at the half.  RIC's defense held USM to a combined 5-for-23 effort in the first half. 
  • Scoring cooled for RIC in the second half, outpacing USM 12-4 in the third and 15-9 in the fourth for the 68-27 final. 
 
Inside The Stats:
  • RIC outscored USM 38-10 in the paint, and scored 19 points off of 20 Husky turnovers.  Led by eight boards from Guerrier and seven from Madison Medbury, RIC held a 47-26 lead in rebounding. 
 
 
Up Next:
USM remains at home on Saturday, December 9 (1:00 pm) against Eastern Connecticut.  Southern Maine will honor its 1987-1988 women's basketball team at the conclusion of Saturday's game.  The 87-88 squad is being recognized for its induction into the Little East Conference Hall of Fame.
