No. 13 Skidmore Defeats Southern Maine 5-1

GORHAM, Maine – Ryan Waltman had a three-point night with two goals and an assist for the No. 13 Skidmore College Thoroughbreds on Friday night in a 5-1 New England Hockey Conference win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies. Skidmore extended its winning streak to 10 games and sits at 8-0-2 on the season. The Thoroughbreds also had  multi-point efforts from Danny Magnuson and Everett Wardle. Magnuson had a goal and an assist while Wardle assisted on two goals.

Series History:
Tonight's game marked the 44th meeting between the Huskies and Thoroughbreds. The Huskies lead the series 21-18-5. The teams split the season series last year with Skidmore winning the first game 6-2 before the Huskies returned the favor with a 6-2 victory of their own. Both teams won on their home ice last season.
 
The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Kyle Penton (2-3-0), 59:57, five goals allowed, 30 saves
Skidmore: Tate Brandon (8-0-2), 59:23, one goal allowed, 23 saves.
 
How It Happened:
  • Ethan Heidepriem scored 2:55 into the game to put Skidmore ahead 1-0 with Wardle and Kaeden Patrick providing the assists. The visitors doubled their lead thanks to a goal by Whitman from Magnuson and Jaden York a few minutes later.
  • Skidmore added two more goals in the second period with another Whitman goal and a score from Zach Lindewirth. Will Dow-Kenny and Zach Frisk had assists on Whitman's goal while Stephen Perez and Whitman notched helpers on Lindewirth's tally.
  • Senior Nolan McElhaney (Natick, Mass./Long Island University) prevented a shutout with a laser of a goal on the power-play in the third period. His goal is his team-leading fifth of the season. Senior Cole Ouellette (Lewiston, Maine) and junior Zach Desmarais (St. Cyrille, Quebec) recorded assists on the goal.
  • Skidmore scored a power-play goal of their own shortly after McElhaney's goal to make the final score 5-1.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • Skidmore outshot the Huskies 35-24 and led 36-27 in faceoffs.
  • Jacob Zwirecki blocked five shots for Skidmore.
