GORHAM, Maine  –  Freshman Brady Saunders (Brewer, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's basketball team has been named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week. Saunders was named  as the recipients of the LEC's weekly rookie award to start the 2023-2024 season on November 13.
 
Saunders continued his strong play in his inaugural collegiate season averaging 14.0 points, 2.0 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.7 rebounds per game while shooting a solid 52.2 percent (12-for-23) from the field, and 38.5 percent (5-for-13) from three points range.  Helping Southern Maine to a 3-0 week, Saunders scored a career-best 18 points in a 77-70 win over Maine Maritime to start the week, adding three assists and three rebounds.  In the Huskies first road game of the season, Saunders scored 15 points on 4-for-5 shooting, and a perfect 7-for-7 mark from the free throw line in a 87-83 win over UMaine Presque Isle.  Against local rival Saint Joseph's, Saunders had nine points, two assists and two steals as Southern Maine reclaimed the Costello Cup from the Monks. 
 
Through four games, Saunders is averaging 13.5 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 2.1 steals per game.  The Huskies' guard is shooting an outstanding 51.7 percent (16-or-31) from the floor, and 41.7 percent (7-for-17) from three.  He is a perfect 15-for-15 from the free throw line.
 
Southern Maine (4-0) travels to Bates College on Tuesday, November 21 (7:30 pm) for a non-conference match up.  The Huskies are back at home on November 29 (7:30 pm) against UMaine Farmington before starting the Little East Conference portion of their schedule at No. 4 Keene State on December 2 (3:00 pm)
