MacLeod Scores Lone Goal in 1-0 Huskies’ Win Over Johnson & Wales

GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Saige MacLeod (Dryden, Ontario) scored the only goal in a 1-0 win for the University of Southern Maine Huskies over the Johnson & Wales University Wildcats in women's New England Hockey Conference play. Southern Maine goaltender Haley McKim (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) stopped all 21 shots she faced for her second consecutive shutout. McKim has a 2-1-1 record over the last four games with three shutouts.

The Records:
Johnson & Wales: 1-7-0 (1-5-0 NEHC)
Southern Maine: 4-3-1 (2-1-1 NEHC)

Series History:
Johnson & Wales and Southern Maine have now played 11 times with the Huskies leading the series 7-4. The Huskies won three for the last four meetings entering today but the Wildcats won the last meeting 4-2 on January 21, 2023. Today's result is the second shutout by the Huskies in series history with the first coming in a 2-0 win on January 21, 2022.

The Goaltenders:
Johnson & Wales: Leah White (1-5-0), 58:15, one goals allowed, 31 saves
Southern Maine: Haley McKim (2-1-1), 60:00, zero goals allowed, 21 saves

How It Happened:
  • The Wildcats didn't record a shot on goal until 8:40 into the first period while the Huskies pelted White with shots in the first frame. With just under two minutes left in the period MacLeod forced a turnover behind the Wildcats' net and got around a defender before turning around and firing a shot past White for her first goal of the season.
  • Johnson & Wales had just four shots on goal in each of the first two periods but more than doubled their total in the third period with 10 shots in the stanza. Despite their best efforts, they couldn't find a way to get the puck past McKim.

Inside The Stats:
  • MacLeod is the eighth different Husky to score a goal this season.
  • McKim now has 12 shutouts in her career and is tied with Molly Duer (1998-2002) for the second-most in program history. Her 21 saves in today's game are the second-lowest amount that she has had in a shutout behind the 15 she had in a 3-0 win over Plymouth State on November 19, 2021.
  • The Huskies led in shots on goal 32-21 and led 21-8 after the first two periods.
  • The game featured three penalties with the Wildcats going 0-for-1 on the power-play and the Huskies going 0-for-2.

Up Next:
The next game for the Huskies will be a road game at Colby College on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm. Today's game marked the last home game for the Huskies for the 2023 calendar year. The team will next play on its home ice on January 2, 2024 against the University of New England.
