MacLean and McKim Lead Huskies to 1-0 Win Over Herons

GENEVA, N.Y. – Junior captain Jess MacLean (Red Point, Nova Scotia/Rankin School of the Narrows) scored a first period goal and senior Haley McKim (Moncton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) made 40 saves for the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a 1-0 shutout victory over the William Smith College Herons on Friday evening. McKim saw her first action of the regular season after missing the first four games and recorded the 10th shutout of her career.

The Records:
Southern Maine: 3-2-0 (1-0-0 NEHC)
William Smith: 2-3-0 (2-1-0 NEHC)

Series History:
The two teams have now played six times with the Huskies leading the series 4-2. Southern Maine swept the season series in 2021-22 before falling in overtime to the Herons in the NEHC playoffs. The teams split the series last year with the away team winning each game.

The Goaltenders:
Southern Maine: Haley McKim (1-0-0), 60:00, zero allowed, 40 saves
William Smith: Annie Hauser (1-2-0), 59:36, one goal allowed, 23 saves

How It Happened:
  • MacLean scored the only goal of the game 4:10 into the first period for her first of the year. Sophomore Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, New Brunswick/Mount Academy) and Saige MacLeod (Dryden, Ontario) had the assists on the goal for each of their first points of the season.
  • McKim made 14 saves in the second period and another 17 in the third to hold off the Herons. Seven of her third-period saves came in the final 2:30 including three with the William Smith goaltender pulled.

Inside The Stats:
  • MacLean is the seventh different Husky to score a goal this season.
  • William Smith had the lead in faceoffs won at 35-25 with 20 coming from Lauren Legler.
  • Neither team could convert on the power-play as the Huskies went 0-for-1 and the Herons failed to score on their three chances.

Up Next:
The Huskies will continue their New York road trip tomorrow at 3:00 pm at #14 Elmira College.
