WATERVILLE, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies women's volleyball team faced off against Smith College and Colby College on Saturday in a tri-match hosted by Colby. The Huskies dropped both games falling 3-0 in each contest.
Game One
The Records:
Smith College: 12-6
Southern Maine: 4-12
Series History:
This was the fifth meeting between Smith and Southern Maine and Smith now leads the series 3-2 with today's win.
How It Happened:
- Smith came out the gate strong opening the first set with a 12-2 run and never trailed on their way to a 25-16 set victory. Senior Brianna Delloiacono (Moodus, Conn./ Nathan Hale-Ray) recorded four kills in the set for the Huskies.
- The Pioneers got off to another fast start in the second set with six consecutive points and took the set 25-8.
- The sweep was completed with a 25-7 Pioneer win in set number three.
Inside The Stats:
- Delloiacono finished with a game-high seven kills.
- Smith recorded eight aces in the contest led by two apiece from Ruby Woodward, Claudia Poehlmann, and Ari Cross.
- Smith's Meg Hopkins led all players in assists with 13 followed by freshman Cassidy Weiher (Aurora, Colo./ Cherokee Trail) with 12. Weiher also had two solo blocks.
- Anna Feuer and Poehlmann each had three solo blocks for the Pioneers.
- Senior Sierra Castonguay (Nottingham, N.H./Dover) recorded 12 digs to lead all players.
Game Two
The Records:
Southern Maine: 4-13
Colby: 10-5
Series History:
The two Maine schools have now played 25 times with Colby leading the series 21-4.
How It Happened:
- Colby took the first set by a score of 25-15. Delloiacono and Marjorie Johnson each had five kills for their team in the opening set.
- The Mules won the second set 25-8 and recorded five aces and 13 kills in the set. Johnson had five of those kills for Colby.
- Colby finished off the match with a 25-13 win in the third set.
Inside The Stats:
- Johnson recorded a game-high 10 kills followed by Delloiacono and Brady Moseley with eight.
- Castonguay logged 16 digs for the Huskies.
- Gabby Grujic had 12 assists and five digs for the Mules.
- Sophie Broesamle and Lj Grant combined for seven of Colby's 11 aces with Broesamle notching four and Grant recording three. Grant also had 10 digs to lead Colby.
