Southern Maine, Bates Battle to 0-0 Draw

GORHAM, Maine   -  The University of Southern Maine Huskies pressured for a go-ahead goal, outshooting the Bates College Bobcats 7-4 in the second half, but settled for a 0-0 draw in a non-conference men's soccer game Tuesday night at Hannaford Field.
 
The draw is the first positive result for the Huskies against Bates since 2010 – a 2-0 win for Southern Maine.  Southern Maine is no unbeaten in its last four games (2-0-2). It is the second consecutive scoreless draw for the Huskies.

Today's game marked the 32nd meeting between the University of Southern Maine and Bates College.  Bates leads the overall series 16-9-7. Today's game is the first meeting between Bates College and Southern Maine since 2013.  The Bobcats had won the last three consecutively, including a 9-0 victory on October 16, 2013.  Southern Maine last defeated the Bobcats October 5, 2010 by the score of 2-0, and earned a 1-1 double overtime draw in 2009.
 
How It Happened:
  • Both teams played to a 0-0 halftime score.  Bates pressed early earning a pair of corner kicks in the opening five minutes, but the Huskies put the first shot on target – a long range shot from junior Vincent Anderson (Anchorage, Alaska) following a free kick in the 13th minute.
  • Bates earned five first-half corners, but the Huskies defense kept the Bobcats to just one shot on target – a 30th minute attempt from Henry Kuenstler.
  • IN the second half, Bates earned three consecutive corners but came up empty each time. Southern Maine put three shots on frame in the second half, but Bates goalkeeper Trevor Hammond answered each time. Southern Maine sophomore Cole Johnson (Orange, Mass.) had the Huskies best chance of the second half in the 80th minute.
  • The Bobcats did not register a shot on goal in the second half, but Tife Agunloye missed just wide to the left in the 85th.

Inside The Stats:
  • Southern Maine outshot Bates 11-9 in the game, and 6-1 on target. Bates held a commanding 10-1 advantage in corner kicks, and the Huskies did not register a corner until the second half.  
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine travels to  Rhode Island College on Saturday, October 7 (1:00 pm) in LEC action.  The Huskies return home for two Little East Conference games on  Wednesday (6:00 pm) against UMass Boston, and Saturday (1:00 pm) against Keene State.
