Late Goal Lifts Wheaton Over Southern Maine 2-1

NORTON, Mass.   –  Anda Brown scored her seventh goal of the season in the 56th minute to break a 1-1 game and lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) Lyons over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Tuesday night at Nordin Field.
 
In the midst of a five-game road swing, Southern Maine has gone 4-1 as the visiting team, including a pair of trio conference wins.

Today's game marked the seventh meeting between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and the Wheaton College (Mass.) Lyons.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 5-2, and today's game marked the first meeting since 2013 – a 3-0 USM win.  
 
How It Happened:
  • Wheaton scored early taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth quarter as Delia Knox scored on a pass from Ally Slicer for her fifth goal of the season.
  • Outshooting the Lyons 6-0 in the third quarter, Southern Maine scored the equalizer in the 33rd minute. Junior Abigail Chartier (Lewiston, Maine) notched her 10th goal of the season off of an assist from junior Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle).
  • Wheaton controlled play in the fourth recording four shots and two penalty corners in the opening three minutes before the Lyons scored the game-deciding goal.

Inside The Statistics:
  • Southern Maine had a 14-11 edge in shots; however, Wheaton had a 7-1 lead in penalty corners.
  • Chartier is one of three Huskies with at least 10 goals this season. 
 
Up Next:
Southern Maine closes out its 2023 regular season with a Little East Conference game against Western Connecticut State University on Saturday (12:00 pm).  The 2023 Little East Conference regular season champion, the Huskies have a first-round bye in the upcoming LEC Championship Tournament.  The Huskies will host a semifinal game on Thursday, November 2 (time and opponent TBA).
