Southern Maine Slips Past WestConn 2-1; Finishes 2023 Little East Conference Regular Season Undefeated at 6-0

PLYMOUTH, N.H.   –  Junior Abigail Chartier (Lewiston, Maine) scored the game-winning goal and freshman Norie Tibbets (Skowhegan, Maine) scored the equalizer to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a come-from-behind 2-1 win over the Western Connecticut State University Wolves in a Little East Conference field hockey game Saturday afternoon at Panther Field in Plymouth, NH. Originally scheduled to be played at Hannaford Field in Gorham, the site was moved in order to help comply with Town of Gorham directives.
 
With the win, Southern Maine finished the 2023 Little East Conference regular season undefeated at 6-0. The Huskies are the 2023 Little East Conference Regular Season Champions, and will host a semifinal game on Thursday, November 1 (TBA).

Today's game marked the 17th meeting between the University of Southern Maine Huskies and the Western Connecticut State University Wolves.  Southern Maine leads the overall series 12-4 and has won the last three consecutively.   
 
How It Happened:
  • Despite outshooting the Wolves 13-4 in the opening half, the Huskies trailed WestConn 1-0 at the break.  Reagan Schoen hit a driven long-distance shot in the 23rd minute for her seventh goal of the season and a 1-0 Wolves lead.
  • The Huskies remained behind WestConn until late in the third quarter when Tibbets redirected a pass from junior Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) in the 42nd minute.
  • Southern Maine scored the game-winning goal early in the fourth quarter when Chartier's stick knocked in a centering pass from senior Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine/Oxford Hills).

Inside The Statistics:
  • Chartier's goal is her 11th of the season and ties her for the team lead in goals with Drinkwater. Chartier has 11 goals and four assists for 26 points.  She and Drinkwater each have three game-winning goals this season. 
  • Tibbets' goal is her ninth of the season.  She has nine goals and three assists in her rookie campaign.  She is fourth on the team in scoring.

The 2023 Little East Conference regular season champion, the Huskies have a first-round bye in the upcoming LEC Championship Tournament.  The Huskies will host a semifinal game on Thursday, November 2 (time and opponent TBA).
