GORHAM, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies took on Rhode Island College and Maine Maritime Academy in a women's volleyball home tri-match on Saturday. The Huskies dropped both games falling 3-1 to RIC and 3-0 to Maine Maritime.
Game One
The Records:
Rhode Island College: 7-10 (2-4 LEC)
Southern Maine: 4-15 (0-4 LEC)
Series History:
Today's match was the 31st the two programs have faced off and the Anchorwomen of RIC now lead the series 23-8.
How It Happened:
- The Huskies won the first set 26-24. Junior captain Isabella Smith (Merrimack, N.H.) set the tone for Southern Maine with seven kills in the set.
- Southern Maine opened the second set on a 6-1 run but RIC battled back and the lead changed several times throughout the set before the Anchorwomen tied the match by winning the set 25-23.
- In the third set the Anchorwomen withstood a late comeback attempt by the Huskies. Freshman Cassidy Weiher (Aurora, Colo./ Cherokee Trail) logged three aces for the Huskies in the set.
- RIC closed out the match with a 25-20 win in set number four.
Inside The Stats:
- Weiher recorded a career-high 38 assists.
- Sarina Marines led all players in kills with 13 followed by Smith and senior Brianna Delloiacono (Moodus, Conn./ Nathan Hale-Ray) with 12 apiece. Delloiacono added 10 digs as well.
- Freshman Darrien Pugsley (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) hit the ball well for Southern Maine with eight kills, a new career-best.
- Smith also logged four aces to tie with Weiher for the most in the game.
- Yuleisy Alvelo had 17 assists and three aces for RIC.
Game Two
The Records:
Maine Maritime: 15-3
Southern Maine: 4-16
Series History:
The two Maine schools have now played 22 times with the Mariners leading the series 12-10 including two victories of the Huskies this season.
How It Happened:
- The Huskies hung with the Mariners in the first set before Maine Maritime pulled out a 25-23 win to go up 1-0.
- Maine Maritime took the second set 25-17 to take a 2-0 lead.
- The Mariners finished off the Huskies with a 25-11 win in the third set to sweep the season series.
Inside The Stats:
- Two Mariners, Ila Smith and Sydney Williams, had double-digit kills. Smith logged 16 and Williams tallied 13.
- Delloiacono and sophomore captain Drew Johnson (Pismo Beach, Cali. /Brewer) each had seven kills for the Huskies.
- Delloiacono also led Southern Maine in digs with eight.
