UMass Boston Edges Southern Maine 2-1

GORHAM, Maine   -  John Arruda headed in the game-winning goal in the 55th minute to lead the UMass Boston Beacons to a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Wednesday night at Hannaford Field.

Today's game marked the 41st meeting between the UMass Boston Beacons and the University of Southern Maine Huskies.  UMass Boston leads the overall series 25-14-2.  The Beacons have won 11 consecutively over the Huskies. UMB defeated Southern Maine 2-0 in 2022. Southern Maine last defeated UMB, 1-0, on September 29, 2012
 
How It Happened:
  • Southern Maine led in the 20th minute when Cole Johnson converted a penalty kick after a hard foul in the box. Johnson went to his right to beat the UMB goalkeeper Qasim El-Ashkar for his second goal of the season.
  • The Beacons equalized on a penalty kick of their own in the 27th minute after a handball was called against Southern Maine.  Diego Gisholt converted the penalty for his second goal of the season.
  • The score remained 1-1 through the half.  In the second half, Beacons increased their offensive pressure and earned a corner kic. Gisholt served the ball in from the left and Arruda rose above the Husky defense to head the ball to his right for the deciding goal.

Southern Maine hosts Keene State College on Saturday (1:00 pm) in a Little East Conference game. The Huskies make a quick turn around on the road and will face Thomas College on the road on Sunday (4:00 pm).  The Huskies remain on the road for an LEC contest at Western Connecticut on Saturday, October 21 (1:00 pm).
