LEWISTON, Maine - Senior
Breanna Atwood (Franklin, Mass.) made seven saves, earning her fifth shutout of 2023, to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 0-0 draw against the Bates College Bobcats Sunday afternoon at Bates' Russel Street Field.
The shutout marks Atwood's 20
th of her career, and establishes a new program record for University of Southern Maine women's soccer. Today's shutout erased the 23-year-old record of 19 shutouts set by Husky Hall of Fame member Samantha Whitman '01, who played for the Huskies from 1997-2000.
Atwood set the Huskies' single-season record for shutouts with 11 in 2022. She is 34-8-4 in her career at the University of Southern Maine with a career .814 goals against average.

Today's game marks the 36
th meeting between the University of Southern Maine and Bates College. While Bates leads the overall series 32-2-2 over the Huskies, Southern Maine is 1-0-2 against the Bobcats under the leadership of head coach
Seth Benjamin. USM earned a 1-0 win over Bates at home in 2022.

How It Happened:
- With the Huskies registering 10 shots to Bates' 15, Southern Maine's best chance came in the 16th minute when sophomore Riley Reitchel (Palermo, Maine/Erskine Academy) got her right foot onto a volley, only to see the ball sail just wide of the far post.
- Bates had an outstanding chance in the 61st minute when Charlotte Jones got her head on a corner service, but Atwood rose and snagged the ball out of the air for the save.
- The Huskies had a solid chances in the 86th minute as senior Ashley Sabitino (Scarborough, Maine) had a header on target following a corner kick service from junior Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine) but Bates was able to come up with the save.
