Women’s Ice Hockey Defeated by Worcester State in Non-Conference Contest

GORHAM, Maine – Four second period goals helped Worcester State University pull away from the University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey team on Saturday afternoon. The Lancers took the non-conference game by a score of 6-3.

The Goaltenders: Kelsey Czerniawski: 2-1-0, 33 saves, three goals allowed; Sophomore Ellie Fredenburg (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge and Latin): 0-1-0, 24 saves, six goals allowed.
 
How It Happened/Inside the Boxscore:
  • The Lancers scored two goals in the span of two minutes in the period to take an early 2-0 lead. The first goal came from Clare Conway on the powerplay while the second WSU goal was scored by Cassidhe Wozniak.
  • Sophomore Amelie St-Amant (Cornwall, Ontario/Ontario Hockey Academy) scored her first goal of the season 20 seconds into a USM powerplay to cut the Worcester State lead in half. Sophomores Jess MacLean (Red Point, NS, Canada/Rankin School of the Narrows) and Ally Stymiest (Moncton, NB/The Mount Academy) recorded the assists.
  • The Huskies tied the game at 2-2 off a backhand goal by freshman Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, NB, Canada/The Mount Academy).
  • A goal by Katie Puumala broke the tie and gave the victors a 3-2 lead and the Lancers pulled away with three more goals in the period.
  • In the third period sophomore Madison Chagnon (St. Albans, Vt./Rice Memorial) scored a shorthanded goal off a breakaway by stealing the puck at her own blue line and cruising down the middle of the ice for her 13th goal of the year. Her goal was the first shorthanded one by the Huskies this year.
  • Fredenburg made her first start of the season and made 24 saves.
  • Wozniak scored twice for WSU while Conway had a goal and an assist.
  • Worcester State blocked 15 shots led by six from Kylian Kelly.
Up Next: The Huskies will have a chance for revenge on the Lancers on Tuesday when they travel down to Worcester for a rematch. The opening faceoff is set for 3PM.
