Huskies Pull Away From Castleton 69-39


CASTLETON, Vermont   –  Senior Cody Hawes (Carmel, Maine/Hermon) scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 69-39 win over the Castleton University Spartans Saturday afternoon at Glenbrook Gym. 
 
Earning its sixth LEC win of the season, Southern Maine is presently tied for fourth in the Little East Conference with Eastern Connecticut.  Southern Maine defeated Eastern 87-78 earlier this season at Hill Gym.  They face each other on February 11 in Connecticut.   
 
Hawes was 4-for-6 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line to lead four Huskies in double figures scoring.  Junior Chance Dixon (Lake Worth, Fla./Santaluces) had 12 points and four rebounds, while junior Simon Chadbourne (Westbrook, Maine) added 10 points, five rebounds and a game-high five assists.  Freshman Mark Asare (Roswell, Ga./Centennial) came off of the bench for 11 points, and added four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Series History:
Meeting for the 32nd time in series history, Southern Maine leads the series 22-10.  The Huskies defeated Castleton 72-59 in December and have won the last nine.
 
How It Happened:
  • After a slow start by both teams offensively, Castleton's Justin Schwarzbeck hit a layup to tie the game up at 16 with just over four minutes to play in the first half.  The Huskies seized control of the game with a 14-0 run, and outscored Castleton 17-2 in the final 4:12 of the first to lead 33-18 at the half.  Chadbourne was instrumental in the game-changing run, scoring eight points in the 14-0 run. Dixon had six point in the final four minutes, including a three to put USM up 33-18 in the final seconds.
  • In the second half, Southern Maine shot a solid 47.8 percent (11-for-23) from the field and was 4-for-8 from three.  Hawes scored all 17 of his game-high total in the second half to lead USM to the win.
 
Inside The Stats:
  • USM converted Castleton's 15 turnovers into 20 points.   Six different Huskies recorded a steal, led by two each from Hawes and freshman Mark Asare (Roswell, Ga./Centennial).

The Huskies are off until Saturday (3:00 pm) when they host UMass Dartmouth in Little East Conference action.
