214 University of Southern Maine Student Athletes Named to Fall 2022 Little East Conference Academic Honor Roll

GORHAM, Maine  – Two hundred fourteen of the approximately 450 University of Southern Maine student-athletes were announced as part of the Little East Conference Academic Honor Roll for the fall 2022 semester.  The conference office listed a total of 2028 student-athletes competing in the conference's 21 championship sports from 16 full and associate Little East Conference member institutions as recipients of this academic distinction.
To achieve LEC Academic Honor Roll status, a student-athlete must earn a semester grade point average of 3.00 or better and have been an active member of the team at the conclusion of their fall semester. The LEC Academic Honor Roll debuted in 2020. The Little East Conference also awards All-Academic team honors during each playing season (fall, winter & spring with a different criteria).

Husky student-athletes from each of the 19 Little East Conference championship sports sponsored by the University of Southern Maine (USM does not sponsor women's swimming & diving) were represented on the list.  One sixty seven of the Huskies' honored are members of USM's 10 women's team competing in the Little East Conference, while 128 student-athletes were recognized from the nine men's teams. Broken down by sport USM student-athletes achieving a 3.00 or better grade point average or better: baseball (16), men's indoor and outdoor track & field (52), men's basketball (6), men's cross country (10), men's golf (7) men's lacrosse (12), men's soccer (17), men's tennis (8), field hockey (21), women's basketball (10), women's cross country (9), women's indoor and outdoor track & field (61), softball (18), volleyball (9), women's tennis (4), women's lacrosse (11), and women's soccer (24). Of note, there is some overlap with multi-sport student-athletes resulting in 295 roster spots earning a 3.0 or higher GPA.

"Our student-athletes continue to raise the level of their academic performance every year. I'm so impressed and incredibly pleased with their focus on academic achievement, while balancing the many demands of being an intercollegiate athlete," said University of Southern Maine Athletic Director Al Bean.  "We're very proud of the way they represent us in the classroom, in competition, and in the community.  Congratulations to each of these student-athletes on earning this recognition. "

At the conclusion of the first semester, the University of Southern Maine Department of Athletics had a combined grade point average of 3.193 with 17 of its 22 sports having collective grade point averages of 3.00 or better.  This fall, the Department of Athletics recognized 224 student-athletes with its annual William B. Wise Scholar Athlete award.

Thirty-one Husky student-athletes competing in LEC sponsored sports achieve a remarkable 4.0 grade point average in the first semester, including fall sport student-athletes junior Brooke Carson (Bryant Pond, Maine/Oxford Hills) and graduate student Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine).  A member of the Huskies 2022 LEC regular season champion field hockey team, Carson earned third-team All-Conference honors.  Berthiaume, the women's soccer program's all-time leader in goals, assists and points, helped Southern Maine to its first regular season and tournament championship this fall, and was named first-team All-Conference by the LEC.
