Huskies and Mules Battle to 1-1 Draw

GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore goalie Mason Palmer (Cumming, Ga./Connections Academy) made 29 saves and freshman Kadin Ilott (Kenora, ON, Canada) scored his third goal of the season as the University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey team tied with Colby College 1-1 on Tuesday night.
 
When and Where: Tuesday, January 24, 2023 – Gorham, Maine – USM Ice Arena

The Records: Southern Maine: 4-14-2, Colby: 9-6-2
 
The Goaltenders: Palmer: 0-7-1, 29 saves, one goal allowed; Cj Hapward: 1-2-1, 22 saves, one goal allowed. 
 
How It Happened/Inside the Boxscore:
  • Ilott scored the only goal of the first period with a one-time blast after Tanner McClure (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) won a faceoff. McClure recorded his first assist of the year on the play.
  • Both goalies made nine saves in the period as the teams.
  • Colby tied the game on a Ryan Doolin power play goal in the second period that was assisted by Jake Macdonald and John McElaney.
  • The Mules had shots hit the post twice during the first two periods.
  • The Huskies nearly broke the tie about two minutes into the third period but a potential Tyler Mitchell (Burlington, ON, Canada) goal was called off for a high stick.
  • After 60 minutes of action and the game still tied at one apiece the teams entered a five-minute overtime period that saw both sides have good scoring chances but the score remained 1-1. The tie is the second of the season for both teams.
  • Palmer made three saves in overtime while Hapward stopped two shots.
