Chagnon and Stewart Led Huskies to Win Over William Smith

GENEVA, N.Y. – Goals from sophomore Madison Chagnon (St. Albans, Vt./Rice Memorial) and freshman Olivia Stewart (Fredericton, NB, Canada/The Mount Academy) helped the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-1 win over the William Smith Herons on Friday night. With the win the Huskies even the season series with William Smith 1-1.

 The Records:  Southern Maine: 8-8, 6-3 NEHC, William Smith: 7-9-1, 5-6 NEHC
 
The Goaltenders: Junior Haley McKim (Moncton, NB, Canada): 8-7-0, 25 saves, one goal allowed; Erin Murray: 4-5-0, 25 saves, two goals allowed.
 
How It Happened/Inside the Boxscore:
  • In a first period that featured no scoring or penalties McKim made half a dozen saves while Murray stopped eight Husky shots.
  • Chagnon broke the 0-0 tie with her 14th goal of the season 7:53 into the second period. Seniors Amanda Crowley (South Yarmouth, Mass./Tilton School) and Maddy Young (Westford, Vt.) assisted on the goal. The assists are Crowley's fifth and Young's third on the year.
  • Just 57 seconds later Stewart doubled the lead on a goal that was assisted by Chagnon and freshman Saige MacLeod (Dryden, ON, Canada/Dryden). MacLeod now has four assists on the season.
  • All three goals in the contest came in a span of less than two minutes as the Herons got on the board with a Kayla Ketchabaw goal 57 seconds after Stewart's goal.
  • Stewart now has scored in each of the past three games and has scored the game-winner in the past two games. Her season goal total is now tied for second on the team with five.
  • The Huskies survived a 6-3 Heron advantage in the final minute of the period to hang on for the 2-1 win, their second 2-1 win in as many games.
  • Chagnon recorded her sixth multi-point game in tonight's win.
 
Up Next: The Huskies will continue their New York road trip with a NEHC contest at Elmira College tomorrow at 3PM.
