Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine) scored just 3:21 into the game and five different players scored as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Westfield State University Owls 5-0 in a non-conference women's soccer game Wednesday night at Alumni Field.
Starting the 2022 season with three consecutive away games and three consecutive wins, Southern Maine is now 3-0. It is the first meeting between the Huskies and the Owls – the 2021 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) defending champions.

How It Happened:
- Putting pressure on the Owls defense from the start, Berthiaume scored the 38th goal of her career in the fourth minute bending in a goal from a corner kick for an early 1-0 lead.
- Senior Emma Forgues (Gorham, Maine) scored her second goal in as many games to put USM up 2-0 before the half in the 29th minute, converting an assist from freshman Riley Reitchel (Palermo, Maine/Erskine Academy).
- The score remained 2-0 until the 70th minute when USM rattled off three goals in a span of five minutes to shut the door on the game. Junior Eliza Roy (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills) scored her first goal as a Husky in the 70th minute. Roy struck from 15 yards out off of an assist from freshman Devon Gatz (Millis, Mass.).
- Junior Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine) made it 4-0 in the 73rd. Gould was assists by sophomore Ella Boucher (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) and junior Kiaya Gatchell (Portland, Maine/Deering) on a long through ball down the left side of the field that was served into the middle.
- Gould helped make it 5-0 in the 75th as she and Gatz combined to assist Boucher for the final goal of the game. Boucher hit a strong shot from the top of the 18 for the first goal of her career.
- Junior Breanna Atwood (Franklin, Mass.) turned in a strong performance in net, making six saves to earn the shutout. Her six saves are a season-high.
