UNE Tops Southern Maine 2-1

GORHAM, Maine  – Olivia King and Tori Keyes each scored to lead the University of New England Nor'easters to a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
 
With the series ties at 13-13-3, the Noreasters take the 30th meeting to lead the overall series 14-13-3. Southern Maine defeated UNE in Biddeford 3-2 in 2021.

How It Happened:
  •  King put the Noreasters up 1-0 in the 18th minute, collecting a loose ball off of an initial save and finding the back of the next at the near post.
  • King's goal and UNE's 1-0 lead stood through the rest of the first half.  UNE's second goal came against the run of play as Southern Maine fired off the first four shots of the second half, but Cunningham made two bigs saves in the stretch.  UNE went up 2-0 on in the 58th minute as Keyes, who had just entered in as a sub, headed in an assist from Marie Hoehner.
  • The Huskies cut the deficit to a goal in the 87th minute when graduate student Gaby Panagakos (Scarborough, Maine) was brought down in the box and USM was awarded a penalty kick.. Junior back Mia Sargent (Portland, Maine/Deering) converted from the spot for her first goal of 2022.

  • Southern Maine outshot UNE 21-10 (12-5 on frame) and had a 6-1 advantage in penalty corners. 
  • Sargent's penalty is the sixth goal of her career. She is 4-for-4 in penalties.
