Huskies Suffer Setback Against Maine Maritime

GORHAM, ME – In the final game of a three-day tournament hosted by the University of Southern Maine the USM Huskies were defeated in four sets, 3-1 by Maine Maritime Academy.
 
When and Where: Saturday, September 3, 2022 – University of Southern Maine – Hill Gymnasium
 
Score: Mariners 3, Huskies 1 (25-14, 25-11, 19-25, 25-16)
 
The Records: Southern Maine:  1-2; MMA: 3-0.
 
History: This was the 20th matchup between the two programs and the results now bring the series to 11-9 in favor of Southern Maine.
 
How It Happened:
  • The Mariners, who entered the match already 1-0 on the day thanks to a 3-1 win over the University of New England, scored the first three points of the match in set number one and never looked back. The Mariners led for the whole set to take a 25-14 victory.
  • The second set saw the Mariners continue their strong performance and after breaking an early 5-5 tie MMA put together an impressive string of rallies to close out the set 25-11 to go up 2-0.
  • The Huskies responded by going up 9-4 to start set number three and withstood a MMA comeback attempt to take the set 25-19 and force a fourth set.
  • The fourth set was tightly contested with six ties and three lead changes but the Mariners were eventually able to come away with a 25-16 win to take the match 3-1 and remained undefeated.
Inside The Boxscore
  • Sophomore Isabella Smith (Merrimack, NH) led the Huskies with 10.5 points coming off five kills, five aces, and a block assist.
  • Junior Brianna Delloiacono (Moodus, CT) also had five kills as did freshman Sophia Biggie (Castine, ME). Delloiacono notched four service aces as well.
  • Freshman Savannah Hunter (Saco, ME) paced the Huskies in both assists (18) and digs (eight).
  • The Mariner attack was led by Rachel Melampy with a game-leading 17 kills and a .531 attack percentage. Fellow Mariner Ila Smith also hit above .500 with a .526 clip and 13 kills.
  • Katie Albritton led all players with 33 assists while Sydney Rich (14) and Albritton (10) each notched double figure digs.
 
 
Up Next: The Huskies will travel to Brunswick, ME to face Bowdoin College on Wednesday, September 7 for a 7:00 pm matchup.
