Southern Maine Shuts Out UMass Boston 4-0; McKenna With Second Brace of 2022

GORHAM, Maine  -  Sophomore Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine) scored the second brace of her career and junior Mia Sargent (Portland, Maine) and graduate student Gaby Panagakos (Scarborough, Maine) each added goals as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the UMass Boston Beacons 4-0 in a Little East Conference women's soccer game Wednesday night at Hannaford Field.

Facing each other for the 28th time in series history, Southern Maine now leads UMass Boston 15-13 all time.  The Beacons had won the last two over the Huskies.  The Huskies have won four straight and are 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the Little East.

The Records:
UMass Boston (1-7-2, 0-3 LEC)
Southern Maine (7-1-0, 3-0 LEC)

How It Happened:
  •  McKenna scored the first of her two goals in the game in the 14th minute, running onto a lofted ball from junior back Sarah Lowell (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee). Lowell's perfectly weighted ball sprung McKenna free from the UMB defense and put her one-on-one with the UMB keeper.
  • The Huskies went up 2-0 just before halftime. After a Husky forward was brought down in the box, junior back Mia Sargent (Portland, Maine) calmly converted the penalty kick to the lower right side of the net in the 44th minute.
  • Southern Maine went up 3-0 in the 58th following up a build-up play on the left side of the field. With sophomore Kiki Huntress (Kittery Point, Maine) and junior Eliza Roy (Camden, Maine) using some strong passing to get the ball up front, junior Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine) used her speed to drive at the UMB defense before slotting the ball across to McKenna. McKenna hit a one-time shot to the top of the net for her brace.
  • Panagakos made it 4-0 in the 71st minute with her third goal of the season.  Freshman Devon Gatz (Millis, Mass.) served in her team-leading fourth assist of the season to the far side of the box, and Panagakos hit a one-time shot to the opposite corner for the final goal of the game.
  • Junior goalkeeper Breanna Atwood (Franklin, Mass.) played well in goal to earn the shutout. She made four saves and several key defensive plays.
