Southern Maine Runs Over UMass Dartmouth 6-2

GORHAM, Maine  - Junior Catriona Gould (Freeport, Maine) scored a pair of goals, and five different players scored, as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the UMass Dartmouth Corsairs 6-2 in a Little East Conference women's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.  The Huskies are now 4-0 in the Little East Conference and have won five straight.
 
Facing each other for the 35th time in series history, Southern Maine now leads the series 16-15-4 with today's victory.  The Huskies defeated UMass Dartmouth 4-0 in 2021 and has now won its last five games against UMass Dartmouth.

How It Happened:
  • Four different players scored in the opening 25 minutes as Southern Maine rushed out to a 4-0 lead before the half. Gould put the Huskies on the scoreboard in the 15th minute, finishing a well-placed ball from graduate student Gaby Panagakos (Scarborough, Maine).
  • Sophomore Julia McKenna (Windham, Maine) and freshman Ciera Hill (Pembroke, N.H./Pembroke Academy) scored less than a minute apart to quickly make it 3-0 in the 22nd minute.  McKenna received a through ball from Hill at 22:04 for her fifth goal of the season, before Hill collected a loose ball in the box shortly after the restart to drive in a goal to the low, far post at 22:10.
  • USM took a 4-0 lead into the break following a 25-yard blast from sophomore Aly Veilleux (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Memorial) in the 25th minute. 
  • The Corsairs came out with intensity in the second half and cut their deficit to two goals, 4-2, in short order on back-to-back goals from Jordana Golove in the 49th and 50th minute. Golove's first goal came on a loose ball header, while her second was a low driven shot to the right.  The goals were the first and second of the season for Golove.
  • USM responded, however, closing out the game with two more goals.  Gould earned her brace in the 59th minute, running onto a through ball from sophomore Kiki Huntress (Kittery Point, Maine/Traip Academy) for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.  Graduate student Ciera Berthaiume (Windham, Maine) closed the scoring, collecting a loose ball and firing a goal to the near post.

Inside The Stats:
  • Gould's brace is her third of the 2022 season. She has eight goals and three assists so far this season and has 17 goals and seven assists in her career (41 points).  She is tied for 10th in USM women's soccer career points with Missy Etsy (1986-89) and Adela Kalilwa (2016, 2018-19). 
  • Berthiaume's third goal of the season give her seven points in 2022 (3 g, 1 a,).  Already the all-time leader in goals and points, Berthiaume is presently second in career assists (39 g, 17 a). She now has 95 career points.   
  • USM has outscored its LEC opponents 15-2 in three games. Overall the Huskies are outscoring their opponents 31-5. Twelve different Huskies have scored this season.   
 
 
Up Next:
Playing in its second game of the weekend, Southern Maine remains at home and will take on non-conference opponent Bates College on Sunday (1:00 pm).
