Huskies Fall on the Road at UMass Boston 2-0

BOSTON –   Luan Cruz and Diego Gisholt each scored a goal to lead the UMass Boston Beacons to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Wednesday afternoon at Monan Soccer Field.

The win is the fifth straight for the Beacons over the Huskies.  UMass Boston leads the 40-game series 24-14-2 with today's win.  The game was just the second home game of the season for UMB, who is now 2-0 on its home pitch.

The Records:
Southern Maine (2-4-2, 0-3 LEC)

How It Happened:
  • The Huskies pressured early putting two shots on frame in the sixth minute, but attempts from senior Noah Perry (Waterboro, Maine) and junior Yahya Altaie (Westbrook, Maine) were both turned away.  UMB goalkeeper Qasim El-Ashkar made the initial save on Perry's attempt, while UMB made a team save on Altaie's shot.
  • UMB's Cruz put the Beacons up a minute later, finishing an assist from Luis Spinola for his second goal of the season. Cruz's goal stood through halftime.
  • The score remained unchanged in the first 30 minutes of the second half before Gisholt scored an unassisted goal in the 77th minute to make it 2-0 in favor of the Beacons. The goal was Gisholt's second of 2022.
  • Husky senior Zekariya Shaib (Portland, Maine) had a shot on goal in the 80th minute but again USM had its shot denied by El-Ashkar.
