No. 13 Bowdoin Defeats Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine – Faith Jennings scored three times to lead the No. 13 Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 6-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference field hockey game Thursday night at Hannaford Field.
 
Facing each other for the 51st time in series history, Bowdoin now leads USM 40-6-5.  Bowdoin defeated Southern Maine 10-0.  The Huskies' last scored against Bowdoin during the 2016, also a 6-1 loss.  Former Husky Lindsay Jackson '17 scored the lone USM goal.
 
Two of the Huskies' (2-3) losses are against nationally-ranked opponents.

How It Happened:
  •  Jennings started the scoring collected a rebound off of a save in the ninth minute to score her first goal of the season and the first of two Bowdoin goals in the opening quarter.  Maya Malefant made it 2-0 in the 12th minute.
  • In the second quarter, Jennings made it 3-0 with goal in the final minutes of the half on an assist from Sophia Rosati. 
  • Bowdoin scored three goals in the third to lead 6-0.  Sophia Rutman made it 4-0 deflecting in a centering pass from Malenfant in the 33rd minute and was followed by Jennings in the 39th for a 5-0 lead and the hat trick.  Georgie Coetzer added her second goal of the season in the 45th minute to close out the third.
  • Southern Maine broke up the shut out bid in the fourth quarter.  Registering its first shot of the game in the fourth quarter, the Huskies broke through for the score in the fourth following a penalty corner and a loose ball in the box.  Sophomore Ginny Twitchell (Turner, Maine/Leavitt) was able to collect the loose ball and drive it home for her third goal of the season.

Inside The Statistics:
  • Getting her first intercollegiate start, USM freshman Eleanor Folsom (Winthrop, Maine) made a season and career-high 10 saves. 
  • Sophomore Jaigan Boudreau (Dayton, Maine/Thornton Academy) turned in another strong game defensively for the Huskies, and earned a defensive save.  It is her second defensive save of the season and third of her career. 
 
Up Next:
The Huskies remain at home on Saturday (11:00 am) for a Little East Conference game against Western Connecticut State University.
