Husson Holds Off Huskies’ Comeback Attempt

BANGOR, Maine – After going down 0-2 early against Husson University the University of Southern Maine volleyball team rallied back to force a fifth set before falling 3-2 to the Eagles in a road match on Wednesday night.
 
When and Where: Wednesday, September 14, 2022 – Husson University – Newman Athletic Gymnasium
 
Score: Eagles 3, Huskies 2 (25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 21-25, 15-8)
 
The Records: Southern Maine: 1-6; Husson: 2-4.
 
History: This was the 58th meeting between the two programs and with the win Husson now trails the Huskies 41-17.
 
How It Happened:
  • Husson pulled out wins the first two sets with a score of 25-23 each time in two highly contested sets.
  • Trailing 0-2 the Huskies' attack came to life in the third set and recorded a .355 hitting percentage with just one attack error to take the set 25-19 and stay alive.
  • The comeback attempt continued in the fourth set as Southern Maine squeaked out a 25-21 win to force a tie-breaking fifth set.
  • The Eagles put the Huskie comeback attempt to bed in the fifth set despite a strong effort from Southern Maine and took the set 15-8.

  • The Perry sisters impressed for Southern Maine with senior captain Meg Perry (Gorham, Maine) recording 22 kills, six aces, and eight digs and freshman Ellie Perry (Gorham, Maine) leading the team with 17 digs.
  • Sophomore Isabella Smith (Merrimack, N.H.) and junior Tori McMahon (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./ Roy C. Ketcham) each recorded 16 digs for the Huskies.
  • Sophomore Reese Bourgeois (Agawam, Mass.) recorded 12 kills.
  • Freshman Savannah Hunter (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) led Southern Maine with 39 assists.
  • Julia Leavitt led the Eagles in kills with 24 while Amber Lemay led them in digs with 17.
 
Up Next: The Huskies will host a tri-match with LEC rival Castleton University and Suffolk University on Saturday. USM will first open LEC play with a match against Castleton at noon before battling Suffolk at 4PM.
