Southern Maine Opens with 2-0 Win Over Clark

GORHAM, Maine –  Sophomore Kiki Huntress (Kittery Point, Maine/Traip Academy) and graduate student Gaby Panagakos (Scarborough, Maine) each scored a goal to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over the Clark University (Mass.) Cougars Thursday night at Granger Field.

The win is the first for Southern Maine over Clark in the five-game series between the two schools. Tonight's meeting is the first for the Huskies against the Cougars since the 2002 season, a 2-1 win for Clark.

The Records:
Southern Maine (1-0-0)
Clark (Mass.) (0-1-0)

How It Happened:
  • After a scoreless 36 minutes, Huntress scored the deciding goal in the 37th minute.  Following a failed clearance off of a USM corner, junior Sarah Lowell (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) lofted a ball back into the 18 and onto the head of Huntress. Huntress flicked the ball on target past the save attempt from Clark's Anabella White.
  • Panagakos scored the first goal of her USM career in the 59th minute.  Running onto a ball from freshman Devon Gatz (Millis, Mass.), Panagakos split the Clark center back and beat White to the near post with a low driven shot.

Inside The Stats:
  • Under head coach Seth Benjamin, Southern Maine has won each of its first contests of the season, earning wins over Mitchell in 2018, Thomas in 2019, and Thomas in 2020.  With tonight's 2-0 win, the Huskies have outscored its first opponent of each season by a score of 21-0.
  • Huntress' goal is the third of her career and second game-winning goal.  As a freshman, Huntress had two goals and three assists, scoring the game winner against LEC opponent UMass Dartmouth in a 4-0 win.
  • Atwood now has five shutouts in her career. She is now tied for eighth in career shutouts. The Huskies' school record for shutouts in a career is held by Class of 2022 Husky Hall of Fame inductee Samantha Whitman (1997-2000).  Whitman had 19 shutouts in her career.
  • Freshman Reiley Reitchel (Palermo, Maine/Erskine Academy) nearly doubled the Huskies' lead in the first half immediately following Huntress' goal. Reitchel was played in behind the Clark defense and had her one-vs.-one attempt go off of the far side post.
Up Next:
Southern Maine remains on the road for its next contest and will travel to nearby Saint Joseph's College (Maine) for a 1:00 pm non-conference game.
