HOW IT HAPPENED: USM 10, MIT 4
  • Junior Jonathan Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) hit a three-run home run over the center field fence in the bottom of the sixth, breaking open a 5-4 game to lead USM to a 10-4 win over the Engineers in game one.
  • USM had led 5-1 after four innings, highlighted by a two-run single down the left field line by junior Tom Vesosky (Colchester, Vermont) in the bottom of the fourth. MIT chipped away at the Huskies' lead with a two-run double to right from Erik Anderson in the top of the fifth.  The Engineers made it a one-run game, 5-4, with an RBI triple from Teddy Shoenfeld.
  • With the Huskies' lead cut to one, USM's bats came alive scoring five runs on four hits, and a pair of walks. Senior Jason Komulainen (Gorham, Maine) drove in the first run of the game with an infield single, scoring junior Colby Dexter (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee). Dexter led off the inning with a walk.
  • With Dexter and Vesosky (reached on a walk) on the bases, Wilson launched his fourth home run of the season to make it 9-4.  Senior Brogan Searle-Belanger (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) walked in his at-bat and sophomore Jack LeBlond (Lewiston, Maine) made it 10-4 with an RBI double.
  • In the seventh, reliever Lucas Francis (Lisbon, Maine) retired the Engineers in order for the 10-4 final. Sophomore Matt Burnett (Ellsworth, Maine) earned his fourth win of the season. Burnett went 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks and struck out five.

HOW IT HAPPENED: USM 10, MIT 3

  • USM made it 8-0 in the third as Komulainen drove in a run on a sacrifice fly deep to center field for one RBI, and the Huskies took advantage of an error on the transfer to score the second with heads up running from Dexter.
  • The Engineers scored in three in the fourth. Erik Anderson led off the inning with a solo home run over the scoreboard in left field, and MIT made it 8-3  on a two-run double down the left field line from Reed Tubbs.
