Southern Maine Rolls Plymouth State 14-2 (7 innings)

GORHAM, Maine  – Senior Jason Komulainen (Gorham, Maine) was 3-for-3 at the plate with seven RBI and freshman Clay Robbins (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) threw six strong innings to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 14-2 (7 inning) Little East Conference baseball win over the Plymouth State University Panthers Tuesday afternoon at Parish Field.
 
Southern Maine defeated PSU 9-0 on April 18 at home and earns the season sweep of the Panthers with the win. The win also marks the Huskies ninth straight victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED: USM 14 PSU 2 (7 innings)
  • Holding the Panthers scoreless and limiting PSU to just one it, a second inning single, through the first five innings Robbins picked up his second win of the season, setting his team up for a key LEC win on the road.
  • After a scoreless first and second inning, Southern Maine jumped ahead of PSU 4-0 in the top of the third. Junior Tom Vesosky (Colchester, Vermont) led off the inning with a single down the left field line and moved to third on a wild pitch.  Sophomore Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) made it first and third after drawing a walk before Komulainen drove in the first of his seven RBI with a double to left to score Vesosky. 
  • Junior Arlo Pike (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) added an RBI single to center field, and senior Brogan Searle-Belanger (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) added an RBI sacrifice fly to right for a 3-0 lead.  Freshman Zach Mooers (Winchester, N.H./Keene) drove in the Huskies final run of the inning with an RBI single up the middle to score Pike.
  • Komulainen stayed hot at the plate and made it 6-0 USM in the top of the fourth. Senior Colby Dexter (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a single to right from Vesosky. With two on and no outs, Komulainen knocked a two-run double to the gap in left field for his second and third RBI of the game.
  • Robbins was in control on the mound, retiring the Panthers in order in the third, fourth and fifth inning.  In the top of the fifth, Southern Maine exploded for six more runs to inflate its lead to 12-0. Vesosky and Seymour each had RBI walks before Komulainen hit a grand slam to left-center field for four more runs and four more RBI bringing his total to seven in the game.
  • PSU broke up the shut out in the sixth scoring a pair of runs.  Sam Malgeri collected the Panthers second hit of the game with a lead off single and Luke Sokolski followed with a home run to make it a 12-2 game.  USM came back in the top of the seventh scoring another two runs on pair of unearned runs for the 14-2 final. 
  • Komulainen finshed the game 3-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and seven RBI. He had a pair of doubles and a home run.  Vesosky also went 3-for-3 for USM with three runs scored and an RBI from the lead off spot. 
 
 
UP NEXT:
Southern Maine travels to Bates College on Thursday (3:00 pm) for a non-conference game.  The Huskies will then host Castleton University on Friday (12:00 pm) in a Little East Conference doubleheader to close out their regular season.  The 2022 Little East Conference Baseball Championship Tournament begins on May 11 at the No. 1 seed.
