Huskies Sweep WestConn: 15-0 (7 inn) and 10-5

HARTFORD, Conn.   – Senior Joshua Joy (Smithfield, Maine/Messalonskee) pitched a scoreless seven innings allowing just two hits and striking out eight to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 15-0 (7 inn.) win over Western Connecticut in Little East Conference doubleheader sweep Sunday afternoon at Trinity College.
 
Joy had plenty of run support in game one as the Huskies pounded out 22 hits, including eight for extra bases.  Southern Maine won game two 10-5 for the sweep.  With the pair of wins, Southern Maine has won its last six games consecutively.

GAME 1 - HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • USM jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first and rolled to a 15-0 (7 inning) win over WestConn. Husky junior Arlo Pike (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) had a three-run double in the first.
  • Highlighted by a two-run home run from freshman Zach Mooers (Winchester, N.H./Keene) the Huskies added three more runs in the top of the third to lead 7-0.
  • Adding four more runs in the fourth, USM pounded out five hits including a home run from sophomore Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), RBI doubles from Mooers and junior Tom Vesosky (Colchester, N.H.) and an RBI single from senior Brogan Searle-Belanger (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy).
  • USM lead 13-0 after the fifth on a two RBI single from Jonathan Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) and went up 14-0 after an RBI single in the sixth from senior Jason Komulainen (Gorham, Maine).  Sophomore Rodney Bean (Norway, Maine/Oxford Hills) made it 15-0 in the seventh with an RBI single to right.
 
 
GAME 2 - HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Southern Maine continued to roll offensively in game two and led WestConn 10-2 after seven innings before letting up three runs in the eighth for the 10-5 final.
  • Komulainen and Mooers each had doubles for the Huskies, while Vesosky had a triple. Sophomore Janek Luksza (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills) had two RB, while Vesosky was the Huskies' lone repeat hitter at 2-for-4 with a pair of walks. Mooers was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
  • Husky sophomore Bryce Afthim (Windham, Maine) picked up his fourth win of the season, pitching a solid 7.1 innings allowing three earned runs (five total) on eight hits and two walks. Afthim struck out eight in the win. 
 
UP NEXT:
Southern Maine travels to Colby College on Wednesday (4:00 pm) in a non-conference game, and then hosts Babson College on Thursday (3:30 pm). .
