GORHAM, Maine – Two hundred and four University of Southern Maine Student-Athletes were named to the Fall 2021 Little East Conference Academic Honor Roll, announced by the conference on Wednesday. To earn a spot on the honor roll, a student-athlete must maintain above a 3.0 GPA for the semester and be an active member of the team at the conclusion of the season. The LEC recognized 1,956 athletes from each of the conference's 21 championship sports.
Student-athletes from each 19 of the LEC championship sports sponsored by USM were recognized on the Fall 2021 Academic Honor Roll. One hundred thirteen of the Huskies recognized are members of one of USM's 11 women's programs, while 91 are members of one of the 11 men's programs.
The number of honorees per team is as follows. Baseball (24), Men's Basketball (7), Men's Cross Country (10), Golf (5), Men's Lacrosse (12), Men's Soccer (12), Men's Tennis (5), Men's Indoor & Outdoor Track and Field (24), Women's Basketball (12), Women's Cross Country (8), Field Hockey (18), Women's Lacrosse (15), Softball (18), Women's Soccer (19), Women's Tennis (4), Women's Indoor & Outdoor Track and Field (21), Volleyball (9). Some students are two-sport athletes and count towards both team's totals, but only count once towards the department's total.
Numerous Huskies who earned the honor also had noteworthy achievements in their sports this fall. Ciera Berthiaume (Windham, Maine/Windham) of the women's soccer team broke the program record for career goals and career points this season and earned first-team all conference honors. Cross country standout Masho Gebremikael (Portland, Maine/Deering) had a similarly successful fall, earning first-team all conference honors after finishing third at the conference meet. During her rookie campaign with the field hockey program, Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle) was named Little East Conference Rookie of the Year and earned NFHCA Scholar of Distinction honors for maintaining above a 3.9 GPA. In the inaugural season of a Little East Conference golf championship, Zach Ellsworth (Saranac Lake, NY/Northwood School) led the Huskies to a third place finish as a team with his all-conference worthy fifth place finish.
This year, the USM Department of Athletics will recognize 215 William B. Wise scholar-athletes from the 2020-2021 school year. The department posted a 3.24 average GPA among all student-athletes during that time period.
