HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Smith hit the first of two home runs in the game to highlight a six-run bottom of the second for Webster.  The Gorlocks started the inning with back-to-back singles from Parker Wielt and Evola, before scoring their first run on a sacrifice fly to center field, followed by an RBI single to left from Matt Staker.  Webster led 4-0 after scoring a pair of unearned runs on a fielding error before Smith went long for the home run.
  • Southern Maine took back two runs in the top of the third on RBI singles from sophomore Cam Seymour (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and junior Arlo Pike (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle), making it a 6-2 contest.  However, Webster scored two more in the home half of the inning, including an RBI double to left from Evola to lead 8-2 into the fourth.
  • Smith made it 10-2 in the fourth following up Adam Lovell's lead off single with a home run for another two RBI. Webster made it 11-2 in the fifth on an RBI double from Zach Goodman, and added two more for a 13-2 lead after six on an RBI double from Ben Swords and a run scoring single from Evola.
  • Gorlock starter Carter Hunt went the distance, striking out six and giving up just six singles to the Huskies.  He retired the USM batters in order in the top of the seventh to seal the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Today's game marked just the third meeting between Southern Maine and Webster.  Webster now leads the series at 2-1. The two teams have previously met in the 2003 NCAA Division III National Tournament (7-2 USM win) and in 2018 in Florida at the RussMatt tournament (8-5 Webster win).
  • The Huskies have played five nationally ranked opponents in their first six games of the 2022 season.  Webster has now won five of their last six contests.
  • Pike was USM's lone repeat hitter finishing the game 2-for-3 with an RBI.
