New England College Slips Past Southern Maine in Overtime

Box Score HENNIKER, N.H. – Bernie McGovern (Medford, Mass./South Shore Kings) scored just 33 seconds into overtime to lift the New England College Pilgrims over the University of Southern Maine Huskies 5-4 in Henniker on Tuesday night.

When and Where: Tuesday, February 8, 2022 – New England College – Lee Clement Arena

Score: New England College 5, Southern Maine 4 

History: This was the 50th meeting between the two programs. The Pilgrims now lead the series 37-6-7. 

The Records: Southern Maine: 7-11-1, 5-8-1 NEHC; New England College: 12-8-1, 7-8-1 NEHC

The Goaltenders: Kyle Penton (Waltham, Mass./Albany Academy): 36 saves, .878 save percentage; Andrew Kormos (Milford, Mich /Metro Jets) 27 saves, .871 save percentage.

How It Happened/Inside the Box Score: 
-The first two minutes and thirty seconds of play saw four goals between the Pilgrims and the Huskies. 

-Austin Marini (Hyde Park, Mass./Catholic Memorial) opened the scoring, giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead, before the Pilgrims answered back with goals from Hunter Hall (Boise, Idaho/Rochester Grizzlies) and Alex LaPlante (Londonderry, N.H./NH Cyclones).

-Curtis Judd (Newton, Mass./Albany Academy) scored his fourth goal of the season to tie things at 2-2.

The Pilgrims would get one more in the first period as Brendan White (Medford, Mass./Kenai River Brown Bears) found the back of the net in the 13th minute of play.

-The Huskies dominated the second period as Marini scored his second goal of the game and Christopher Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn./Nichols School) scored his first goal as a Husky to make the game 4-3. 

-This score held until midway through the third period when Anthony Cinato (Warren, Mich/Metro Jets) tied the game at four a piece.

-An even last ten minutes of play forced overtime where McGovern was able to give the Pilgrims a narrow 5-4 victory.

Up Next: The Huskies will travel to Babson College on Friday, February 11 at 6pm for a NEHC contest.
