Young’s Late Game Heroics Lead Huskies over Pilgrims 2-1

HENNIKER, Maine – Maddie Young (Westford, Vt./Vermont Shamrocks) scored the game-winning goal with just over a minute left in regulation to propel the University of Southern Maine Huskies over the New England Pilgrims 2-1 on Sunday afternoon in Henniker.

When and Where: Sunday, February 6, 2022 – University of Southern Maine – USM Ice Arena

Score: Southern Maine 2, New England College 1

History: This was the 41st meeting between the two programs. The Huskies now lead the series 20-18-3.

The Records: Southern Maine: 13-9, 10-6 NEHC; New England College: 3-16-1, 0-14 NEHC

The Goaltenders: Haley McKim (Moncton, NB/The Mount Academy): 19 saves, .950 save percentage; Sean D'Urso (Andover, Mass./Andover) 53 saves, .964 save percentage.

How It Happened/Inside the Box Score: 
-The Huskies dominated play from the start of the game, out-shooting the Pilgrims 40-15 on goal during the first two periods of play.

-USM's Rylie Binette (Milan. N.H./Berlin) finally broke the 0-0 tie when she scored just under four minutes into the third period.

-The Pilgrims fought back and found the equalizer off the stick of Emily Enzen (Littleton, Colo./Madison Capitols), not five minutes later.

-Skating even the rest of the period, Young scored with 1:14 remaining to lead the Huskies to a 2-1 victory. 

-USM won 36-of-59 face offs, led by Julianne Nelson (Armstrong, BC/Shawnigan Lake School) who won 18 of the 25 she took.  

Up Next: The Huskies will host Salem State on Friday, February 11 at 4pm for a NEHC game in Gorham.
